HT/LT Cable Route Survey — Ahmedabad, Gujarat
HT/LT Cable Route GPR Survey in Ahmedabad
Before a new 11 kV feeder or LT service cable goes into an Ahmedabad street, we find the cables, pipes and ducts already buried along its path, using radar and EM tracing on our own systems.

What does an electric cable route GPR survey in Ahmedabad cover?
The job is narrow and specific: take the alignment of a proposed HT or LT cable and find out what is already in the ground along it, so the trench or bore can be set where it will not hit anything. An electric cable route GPR survey in Ahmedabad gives the cabling contractor three things before excavation – positions of existing services, their approximate depth, and the stretches where the planned route is too crowded to use as drawn.
What we look for on a power cable route:
- existing HT feeders and LT distribution cables, including abandoned runs;
- street-light and signal cables at the kerb;
- water mains, sewer lines and storm drains;
- city gas pipes and service connections;
- telecom cables and OFC ducts of several operators.
This page deals only with power cable routes in the city. For the wider picture of radar work across Ahmedabad, see our Ahmedabad GPR survey page; the method itself is explained on the HT/LT cable route GPR survey service page.
Where do HT and LT routes in Ahmedabad get crowded?
Ahmedabad's distribution network spreads from the walled city on the east bank of the Sabarmati to the newer western areas along SG Highway, and congestion below ground follows a different pattern in each zone.
- Walled old city. The lanes of this UNESCO World Heritage City are so tight that a new LT cable often has to share a strip barely wider than a trench with water, drainage and older cables. Handheld scanning and close line spacing are the norm here.
- SG Highway corridor. Service roads and footpaths along the highway carry feeders for commercial towers alongside telecom ducts laid by more than one operator, so a single footpath may hold several parallel runs.
- Metro alignments. Where Ahmedabad metro runs beside or above a road, utilities were often shifted during construction, and the new positions may not match older records.
- Riverfront roads. Corridors along the Sabarmati riverfront sit on built-up ground, and services there were laid as part of the riverfront works.
- Industrial estates. Feeders into the Naroda, Vatva and Odhav estates cross plots and internal roads where private cables and process lines are common.
For HT cable route mapping in Ahmedabad, these zones matter because the trench width the design allows rarely changes, while the space below ground does.
How do radar and EM tracing work together on power cables?
Radar and electromagnetic locating answer different questions, which is why an underground electrical line tracing job uses both.
- GPR sends pulses into the ground and records reflections from anything unlike the soil – metal or plastic pipes, cable bunches, ducts and chambers. It sees non-conductive services that EM cannot.
- EM locating picks up the field around a live cable, or a signal we apply to a cable or metal pipe. It follows a conductor over long distances and through clutter where radar images get confusing.
- Cross-checking the two removes most doubt: a line seen by both methods is reported with higher confidence than one seen by only one.
Radar depth reach in the city depends on soil type and moisture. In wet clay or saline soil the radar sees less far, in dry sand it sees further; the feeder report notes, for every section, how deep we actually got. Our article on how GPR traces HT and LT cables goes into the detail.
How are road, rail and BRTS crossings handled on a cable route?
Crossings are where a power cable route is most likely to meet trouble, so we treat each one as a small survey of its own rather than as part of the running line.
- Main road junctions get a tighter grid, since services from several directions meet there.
- BRTS lanes are usually crossed by HDD or another trenchless method, so we scan the bore path and both pit locations.
- Railway lines through the city need the railway's permission for access; once the project owner has it, we scan the permitted strip and the approach on each side.
- Nalas and storm drains are recorded so the designer can decide whether the cable passes over or under.
Traffic arrangements, road permissions and any night working needed at busy crossings are charged outside the survey rate and shown as separate lines in the quote.
Is Mezux connected with Torrent Power?
No. Torrent Power is the electricity licensee for Ahmedabad city, and much of the cable work here is linked to its network. Mezux Touch has no affiliation, approval or empanelment with Torrent Power or any other distribution company. We work for whoever places the order – usually a cabling contractor, an EPC firm, a consultant or a developer – and the findings go to that client. If the licensee's specification sets particular survey requirements, send us the wording and we will tell you what we can deliver against it.
What does an HT/LT route survey in Ahmedabad cost?
Our charge is set per metre of cable alignment surveyed. A plain route survey is ₹24 a metre. If the work order asks for a depth profile of the services found, it becomes an L-section survey at ₹32 a metre. Any order shorter than 4 km is billed as 4 km, and with Ahmedabad lying outside Delhi NCR, the smallest invoice we raise for a project there is ₹1,00,000. GST is added on top.
| Cable route | Survey type | Before GST |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5 km LT service extension | Standard | ₹1,00,000 (billed as 4 km = ₹96,000, raised to project minimum) |
| 6 km 11 kV feeder | Standard | ₹1,44,000 |
| 6 km 11 kV feeder | L-section | ₹1,92,000 |
| 120 km city cabling package | Standard, 25% slab | ₹21,60,000 |
Large Ahmedabad cable packages are discounted on the entire order. Feeder packages past 100 km earn 25% off; programmes that pass 500 km earn 40%; anything over 1,000 km pays half the normal rate. The Faridabad crew trip, any night working, traffic and permission arrangements, and drawings in CAD or GIS format are each priced individually. The full rate card is on our GPR survey price list.
What else can be added to a power cable survey?
- Depth profile – when the contract wants depths plotted along the alignment, order the Ahmedabad L-section survey in the same visit.
- Trial pits or boreholes – on request, to prove a depth or identity at a few critical points.
- Cable fault locating – a separate task from route survey, quoted on its own.
- Drawings – CAD or GIS sets can be prepared from the survey, priced separately.
If you are still choosing between methods, our comparison of an EM cable locator and GPR explains where each one is stronger.

Questions about HT/LT cable route survey in Ahmedabad
Can you tell an HT cable from an LT cable underground?
Not reliably by radar alone, since both appear as similar reflections. EM tracing helps, because an energised cable can be followed back to a known point such as a substation or feeder pillar. Where identity matters for the design, we flag the line as unconfirmed and suggest a trial pit at a safe point to prove it.
Do you survey cable routes inside the walled city?
Yes. Narrow lanes rule out large carts, so we use compact equipment and handheld locators, often early in the day before shops open. Progress per shift is slower than on a highway service road, which affects the programme but not the per-metre rate on your quote.
Will the survey find abandoned cables?
Often, yes. Radar responds to the physical cable whether or not it is live, so dead runs usually show up. EM may miss them because they carry no current. Abandoned lines are reported as such where the evidence supports it, so the contractor knows they can be treated differently.
Can you scan a feeder route that crosses into an industrial estate?
Yes, once the client has arranged access with the estate or plot owner. Internal estate roads frequently carry private cables and process lines that appear on no public record, so we scan them with the same care as city streets and list unknown lines separately.
How soon should the trench follow the survey?
As soon as practical. Paint marks on Ahmedabad roads fade under traffic and are sometimes covered by other works within days. The signed report keeps the findings permanently, but a long gap between survey and excavation raises the chance that someone else has dug in the meantime.
Do you work on routes outside the city limits as well?
Yes. Feeders often run beyond the municipal area towards the SP Ring Road and nearby towns. The same rate card applies, and adding those stretches to a city order helps the combined length reach a discount slab sooner.
