GPR Survey Cost in India — How Radar Survey Work Is Actually Priced
Why one contractor quotes per kilometre, another per day and a third per square metre — what each basis hides, and how to compare three offers that look nothing alike.

Short AnswerThere is no standard rate for GPR survey in India, and any firm quoting one before seeing your site is quoting a number they intend to revise. Price is driven by five things: the pricing basis used, the ground and congestion, the depth of deliverable, site access, and whether physical verification is included. What genuinely moves the number
Ground conditions. This is the single biggest variable and the one clients most often overlook. Dry sandy or gravel ground lets radar reach depth cleanly and a crew moves fast. Clay, black cotton soil, saline ground and a high water table absorb the signal, force lower frequencies, slow progress and demand far more interpretation time for the same length of route.
Utility congestion. A greenfield corridor with three known services is a different job from an old city street where power, water, sewer, gas and four generations of telecom overlap in two metres of width. Congestion drives tighter line spacing, more cross-lines and hours of desk interpretation that never appear in a headline rate.
Deliverable depth. A paint mark on the road for a gang to dig against is the cheapest possible output. A coordinate-tied, depth-annotated CAD drawing with confidence attributes, GIS layers and a signed report written to an authority's submission format is a different product with real engineering hours behind it. Two quotations can differ threefold purely on this.
Scope size and mobilisation. Short jobs carry disproportionate cost because travel, setup, permits and crew time do not scale down. This is why most survey firms — ourselves included — set a practical minimum, and why a two-kilometre stretch will never carry the same per-kilometre rate as fifty.
Access and working hours. Night working on arterial roads, traffic marshalling, airside escorts, permit-controlled refinery areas and monsoon standby all convert directly into standing time. So does a site where the crew waits at the gate for a safety induction that was not arranged.
Physical verification. Trial pits and vacuum excavation are civil activities with their own permission, traffic management and reinstatement obligations. They belong on a separate line, and a quotation that buries them inside a survey rate is not one you can compare.

If a quotation cannot answer these nine points, the lowest number in front of you is not the lowest cost — it is simply the least specified. Most cost overruns on survey work in India come from scope that was never written down, not from rates that were too high.

What the survey is being weighed against
A survey rate only makes sense next to the cost of not doing it. A single strike on an HT power cable or a gas main brings emergency response, asset-owner recovery charges, a stop-work notice, programme delay and — in the cases that matter most — injury. Municipal penalty for unauthorised damage arrives on top.
Even a benign strike on an old water line means an unplanned excavation, traffic management, reinstatement to specification and a day the drilling crew is not drilling. Contractors who have paid for one of these rarely argue about survey scope on the next project.
The other comparison is redesign. A route or foundation designed over an unmapped service becomes a design change, and design changes carry consultant fees, approval resubmission and programme. Surveying before design freeze is the cheapest point in a project's life to spend this money — and the most expensive point to have skipped it.
None of this argues for the highest-specification survey on every job. It argues for matching the level to the consequence, which is exactly what the SUE framework exists to do.

We do not publish a rate card, because a published rate would be either so padded it is uncompetitive or so bare it would be revised the moment we saw the site — and neither is useful to you. What we do is return an itemised quotation within a stated turnaround once we have the route length or area, the city, the ground type if known, and the deliverable format your engineer or authority expects.
Survey, interpretation, drawing production and any trial-hole verification appear as separate lines, so you can see what each component costs and adjust scope knowingly rather than negotiating a single opaque figure. Exclusions are listed explicitly. Where we believe a client is specifying more confidence than their decision actually requires, we say so — a smaller correct scope is better business for both sides than an oversized one that gets cut later. Because the same kilometre can cost very differently depending on ground, congestion, line spacing and deliverable. A firm number given before those are known is a placeholder that will be revised, and we would rather give you a real figure a day later than a comfortable one now.
In practice yes, because mobilisation, permits and crew time do not scale down below a certain point. Small scopes are usually better handled on a day basis than a length basis, and we will tell you which fits your job.
Check line spacing, deliverable format and whether interpretation and drawing production are included. The usual explanation is a wider scan spacing and a sketch instead of a CAD deliverable — a genuinely cheaper service, just not the same one.

There is no single per-kilometre rate for GPR survey in India, and any figure quoted without four variables stated alongside it means very little. Those variables are line spacing, deliverable format, confidence level required and access conditions. Two quotations differing by half can describe entirely different services, which is why clients comparing rates frequently choose the one that will need redoing.
The four variables that move the number
Line spacing is the largest. A grid set for a 300 mm trunk main steps over a 50 mm service, so halving the spacing roughly doubles the field time and changes what the survey can find. Deliverable format matters more than clients expect: a marked-up site plan is a fraction of the cost of layered CAD with per-feature attributes and a GIS deliverable. Confidence level determines whether physical verification is included, and a single trial hole can cost more than a kilometre of detection. Access conditions decide productivity — a night-only arterial or a trading street yields a fraction of an open corridor.
How to compare two quotations honestly
Ask both bidders for line spacing in metres, the exact deliverable formats, whether any physical verification is included, and what confidence they will state per feature. Ask what happens if the ground does not allow the depth your design needs. A bidder who answers all five specifically is quoting a service; one who answers with a rate is quoting a number. On our side, minimum accepted order value outside Delhi NCR is one lakh rupees per project because mobilisation from Faridabad is a real cost; within NCR there is none.
Beyond the basics
Why will you not quote a per-km rate upfront? Because it would be meaningless without line spacing, deliverable and confidence stated. A rate without those compares nothing between bidders.
What single factor changes the price most? Line spacing. Halving it roughly doubles field time and changes what the survey can actually find, so it should be agreed before any rate.
Is trial-hole verification included? Only if specified. A single trial hole can cost more than a kilometre of detection, so it is always a separate line rather than an assumption.
Why is night work priced differently? Because productivity on a night-only arterial is a fraction of an open corridor, and crew arrangements differ. Blending them hides the real cost.
What if the ground will not give the depth we need? We say so at scoping and recommend complementary methods, rather than delivering a report that cannot support your decision.
