GPR Survey — For EPC Contractors
Underground Utility Mapping for EPC Contractors
Survey ahead of your construction fronts: buried services located, crossings listed and quantities measured in running metres, so cabling, pipeline, telecom and road EPC teams excavate and bore against known ground.

Underground utility mapping for EPC contractors locates the cables, pipes and ducts already buried along a package alignment before trenching or HDD begins. Mezux Touch scans ahead of your fronts with 58 company-owned GPR systems and in-house crews, marks finds on the ground and reports them section by section, at ₹24 per metre or ₹32 with an L-section.

What is underground utility mapping for EPC contractors?
An EPC contractor carries the risk of whatever lies under the alignment from the day the contract is signed. Buried services that nobody recorded become delays, redesigns, repair bills and disputes with the asset owner. Underground utility mapping for EPC contractors moves that discovery to the front of the job, before the trench is opened or the drill rig is set up.
The work is the same whether the package is HT/LT cabling, a water or gas pipeline, an OFC duct network or a road widening with utility shifting. Our crews run ground penetrating radar along the route, trace conductive lines with electromagnetic locators, paint each detected service on the surface and record it in a signed report. Where the design needs it, an L-section survey adds a depth profile of the detected services along the route.
What makes the work suit EPC delivery is the scale behind it. We have done this since 2003 with our own equipment – 58 GPR systems, operated by in-house crews, with nothing sub-let – and the total surveyed now stands above 1.5 lakh km, spread over 28+ States and UTs.
What does an EPC team need from a survey before excavation or HDD?
A contractor's planning engineer asks different questions from an asset owner. The survey should answer them directly, section by section:
- Is the drawn alignment buildable? Stretches where the planned trench sits on top of an existing main or cable are flagged, with the side of the road that has space.
- Where are the crossings? Each place where the new work meets an existing service is listed with position and approximate depth, so the crossing method can be chosen in advance.
- Which crossings need HDD? Bore paths under roads, nalas and rail lines are scanned end to end, including both pit areas. Our HDD route survey page explains that scope in detail.
- Where will progress slow down? Congested lengths that call for hand digging or a revised route are identified before gangs and machines are allocated.
- What could not be seen? Stretches with no access, standing water or poor radar penetration are listed, so the risk is recorded rather than hidden.
These answers feed the design, the method statement and the daily allocation of excavation crews.
Road EPC packages add a further question: which existing services must be shifted before widening, and which can stay where they are. Utility shifting is often a separate cost head with its own approvals, so an early list of affected services, with their approximate positions and depths, helps the contractor raise the shifting proposal with each owner in time. Telecom and cabling contractors working along the same road benefit in the other direction, because the survey shows where newly shifted services now run rather than where an older drawing placed them.
How is the survey matched to the project programme?
A survey that arrives after construction has started is of little use. We plan our work as a front that moves ahead of yours, releasing surveyed and marked lengths in the order your gangs will reach them.
- Sequencing. The package is split into sections that follow your construction sequence, with priority given to stretches where work starts first or where long-lead crossings sit.
- Capacity. Because the radar fleet is ours, extra systems and crews can be put on a package when the programme demands, without waiting for rental availability. Our fleet has delivered as much as 100 km in one day on open corridors, and 700 km within a single 30-day month.
- Shifts. Night working is possible where daytime traffic or access is a problem; it is charged as a separate item.
- Handover. Each section is closed with its own marks and report, so cleared length can be issued to site without waiting for the whole route.
Ground marks fade, so the gap between survey and excavation on each section should be kept short. Where the programme slips, re-marking can be arranged.
How do survey quantities go into the BOQ?
GPR survey is easiest to manage when it is measured as its own item rather than buried inside trenching or laying rates. We bill in running metres of route surveyed, which maps directly onto a BOQ line:
| BOQ item | Unit | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| GPR utility survey, standard | Metre | ₹24 per metre |
| GPR utility survey with L-section | Metre | ₹32 per metre |
| Mobilisation | Lump sum | Quoted separately |
| CAD/GIS drawing sets | As specified | Quoted separately |
| Trial pits or boreholes | Number | On request, quoted separately |
Keeping standard and L-section lengths as separate lines lets the client's engineer see exactly where the depth profile was ordered. Night working and traffic arrangements are added as their own items where the work order needs them. Our guide on GPR survey quantities in a DISCOM tender BOQ covers how to write the item description and measurement rule.
What documentation helps the client approve your design?
Clients and their consultants increasingly ask an EPC contractor to show that existing services were checked before excavation was approved. The survey record gives you that evidence:
- Signed survey report for each section, naming each located service, where it sits relative to the alignment, roughly how deep it lies and which method picked it up.
- Coverage statement giving the penetration achieved per section, plus a list of unscanned lengths and why access failed there.
- L-section depth profile, where ordered, for crossings and clearance checks; see our L-section GPR survey page.
- CAD or GIS drawing sets in the client's layer format, prepared on request and quoted separately – the CAD and GIS utility mapping page explains the options.
Some clients specify survey quality in terms of how each line was obtained, from records only up to physically exposed. Our note on SUE quality levels explains that grading and where radar fits. Our quality, environmental and safety systems are certified to ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018.
What do turnkey underground utility survey solutions from Mezux cover?
Turnkey here means one survey contractor, using its own crews and systems, handles every survey task the package needs instead of the EPC team stitching together several vendors. Turnkey underground utility survey solutions from us can include:
- 2D GPR line survey along the route, with 3D or high-resolution scanning where congestion calls for it;
- EM locating of power cables, metal pipes and traceable telecom lines;
- ground marking of every detected service ahead of excavation;
- signed section-wise reports and, where ordered, L-sections;
- CAD/GIS drawing sets, trial pits and boreholes on request;
- cable fault locating, which is a separate task from route survey;
- HDD crossings drilled by our own rigs, quoted as a separate service.
Each of these is priced on its own line, so the client sees what was ordered. Drilling runs on 18 HDD rigs that we own, and our fleet page describes the equipment behind both services.
How much does utility mapping cost for an EPC package?
The rate card is the same for every package: ₹24 per metre of route for a standard GPR survey, ₹32 per metre when the L-section is added. At least 4 km is billed on any order, and outside Delhi NCR no project is billed below ₹1,00,000. GST is extra. Large packages earn a discount on every metre once the total passes a slab – 25% above 100 km, 40% above 500 km and 50% above 1,000 km – so crossing a slab can lower the total, as the last two rows below show.
| Package | Survey type | Amount before GST |
|---|---|---|
| 3 km OFC link outside NCR | Standard (billed as 4 km, raised to project minimum) | ₹1,00,000 |
| 12 km HT cable package in Delhi NCR | Standard | ₹2,88,000 |
| 60 km water pipeline | L-section | ₹19,20,000 |
| 100 km cable programme | Standard, no slab | ₹24,00,000 |
| 101 km cable programme | Standard, 25% slab | ₹18,18,000 |
Mobilisation, night shifts, traffic arrangements and permissions, and CAD/GIS drawing sets are not in these figures. The GPR survey price list sets out every slab with further examples.

Rates that fit a BOQ
Standard survey at ₹24 a metre and L-section at ₹32 a metre slot straight into running-metre BOQ items.
Package-wide slab discounts
The full package length decides the slab, so combining sections into one order can take every metre to 25%, 40% or 50% off.
Owned systems, no hire
Our 58 GPR systems are owned, not rented, so the rate does not carry a hire charge or a sub-contractor's margin.
Fewer variations later
Finding clashes before design approval means fewer redesigns, idle gangs and change orders once construction is under way.
Pay for depth only where needed
Order the L-section on crossings and congested lengths, and the standard survey on open stretches of the same package.
Separate items kept visible
Mobilisation, night shifts, traffic arrangements and drawing sets appear as distinct lines, so nothing is hidden in the metre rate.

Questions from EPC contractors about utility mapping
Can you survey only the sections we are about to excavate?
Yes. Many contractors release the package section by section in line with their construction sequence. Each release is surveyed and reported on its own, while the whole package can still be treated as one order for the discount slab if that is agreed at the outset.
Do you work as a sub-contractor to an EPC company?
Yes, that is a common arrangement. We take the survey scope from the EPC contractor, report findings to them and work to their programme. We do not sub-let any of our own survey work onward, so the crew on site is always ours.
Can the survey report be submitted to our client as it is?
The signed report is written so that it can go to the client or consultant with your design submission. If the client wants CAD or GIS drawing sets in a specific layer format, those are prepared on request and quoted separately.
What if the alignment changes after the survey?
Changed stretches are surveyed again as additional length at the same metre rate. If the new alignment stays within the corridor already scanned, the existing findings may cover it; we check that against the revised drawing before quoting.
Can night surveys keep pace with a tight programme?
Night shifts are possible where traffic or access makes daytime work slow, and they help keep the survey ahead of construction. Night working sits outside the per-metre price as its own item, as do traffic arrangements and permissions.
Do you provide trial pits to confirm critical depths?
Yes, on request. Where a crossing depth decides the design, digging a pit or sinking a borehole on that spot confirms the radar estimate. These are scoped and quoted as separate items, usually only at the few points where certainty matters most.
