The consequence changes the standard
Every buried service deserves care, but gas is the one where the failure mode is not financial. A struck medium-pressure main is an evacuation, a regulatory notification and, in the wrong circumstances, an injury. That reality sets a different confidence threshold than a water line does.

Most CGD licensees hold network records that were accurate at commissioning and have drifted since through tie-ins, diversions and road works. A one-off survey fixes a stretch; a structured record fixes the problem.
We issue coordinate-tied CAD and GIS layers built so the licensee's own team can extend them as the network grows, with survey date, method and confidence held per feature. That way a record five years old still tells a user how much to trust each line.
For licensees under regulatory obligation to demonstrate network knowledge, this is the difference between a folder of drawings and an auditable asset register.
Emergency and pre-tie-in response
Two situations bring the fastest calls. A tie-in where the existing main's exact position must be confirmed before hot work, and a third-party excavation that has already begun near a main and needs stopping and clearing.
Both are short-duration, high-consequence jobs, and both are handled on a day basis rather than a length basis. Because all 14 systems are company-owned, mobilisation does not depend on a rental yard having a unit free that week.
