Underground utility mapping in Chennai logs every buried service within a set boundary – power and telecom cables, water, sewer and storm-water lines – rather than clearing a single route. Our crews use GPR and EM, mark each find and sign the report. Each metre of scan line is ₹24, with Chennai billing starting at 4 km and ₹1,00,000, plus GST.

What does underground utility mapping in Chennai give you?
A route survey asks one question: is this path clear? Mapping asks a wider one: what lies anywhere beneath this site? Underground utility mapping in Chennai covers a whole area – a campus, an industrial plot, a road junction or a length of corridor – and records each service found, whatever its owner or purpose.
The record normally holds:
- ground marks for every detected cable, pipe, duct and drain;
- a findings schedule listing position, approximate depth, detecting method and a confidence rating for each line;
- services grouped by type, so power, telecom, water, sewer and storm-water can be read separately;
- the depth radar reached across the area and any zones we could not scan.
Layered CAD or GIS files can be built from that record, quoted separately. How mapping works anywhere in India is set out under our utility mapping service.
Where is a utility map most useful in Chennai?
Mapping pays off wherever several services share ground and nobody holds a complete record. In Chennai that usually means:
- IT and office campuses, where internal roads carry power, fibre, water and fire lines laid in several phases;
- industrial estates and factory plots, before foundations, machine bases or new internal roads;
- hospital and university campuses, where a strike on a feeder or water main disrupts critical services;
- road junctions due for widening or redesign, where lines from several owners cross;
- streets near metro works, where CMRL construction has shifted services away from their recorded positions;
- flood-affected localities, before storm-drain rehabilitation by Greater Chennai Corporation or its contractors.
Longer strips, such as an arterial road ahead of a multi-utility project, call for utility corridor mapping in Chennai, which applies the same layered record along a corridor; see utility corridor mapping. Urban renewal projects that need smart city underground mapping in Chennai follow the same method at block or district scale. We hold no affiliation with any of these bodies, the metro operator or the power distributor; the record is made for the client who orders it.
How does subsurface utility engineering in Chennai use this record?
Subsurface utility engineering grades utility information by how it was obtained. Four quality levels are commonly used:
- Records only – existing drawings and as-laid sheets, with no site check.
- Records plus visible features – chambers, valves, pillars and markers seen on site.
- Designated by geophysics – positions traced on the ground with radar and EM.
- Located by excavation – the service exposed and measured in a trial pit.
Our mapping delivers the third level across the area, with the first two folded in. Where a design decision depends on one line, trial pits at those points lift it to the fourth level on request. For subsurface utility engineering in Chennai, this lets the designer see which information is firm and which is not. The levels are explained in our article on SUE quality levels.
When are 3D utility mapping services in Chennai worth the extra effort?
Standard mapping uses 2D radar lines laid out on a grid. That suits most campuses and corridors. A denser, high-resolution 3D grid is worth it where services are tightly packed or change direction often – a busy junction, the area around a substation exit, or a plant yard full of short connections.
A 3D grid shows bends, tees and closely spaced parallel lines that a line survey can blur together. It takes more scan lines per square metre, so it is priced on the metres of scanning actually needed, using the same rate card. We propose the grid for each zone before quoting. The trade-off is discussed at length in when a 3D grid beats 2D lines. For most clients asking about 3D utility mapping services in Chennai, the answer is a mix: 2D across the site, 3D only at the congested spots.
Who prepares the CAD drawings and GIS layers?
We do, when you ask for them – but they are an addition to the survey, not part of the metre rate. Clients searching for underground utility CAD drawing services in Chennai, or for a GIS utility mapping agency in Chennai, can order drawing sets built directly from our field record:
- CAD drawings with each utility type on its own layer, following the layer convention you specify;
- GIS files where each line carries attributes such as approximate depth, method and confidence;
- sets prepared for your site plan or base map, if you provide it.
CAD/GIS sets are quoted separately, once we know the format and level of detail required. The CAD and GIS utility mapping page describes the options.
What limits a utility map in Chennai's ground?
Coastal ground with salty groundwater, and a water table that sits high in many areas, reduce the depth radar can reach. Metal cables and pipes are still traced well by EM. Plastic water pipes, empty ducts and small deep lines are the weak spot, because they show only as a faint contrast in wet, conductive soil.
An honest map shows those limits rather than hiding them. Each line in our record carries a confidence rating, the depth reached is stated across the area, and zones where nothing could be confirmed are left visibly blank instead of drawn as clear.
How is a mapping job in Chennai priced?
Mapping is charged by the metre of radar line scanned: ₹24 as standard, ₹32 where a corridor also needs an L-section depth profile. Because Chennai sits beyond Delhi NCR, two floors hold – 4 km of scanning and ₹1,00,000 per project. GST is added to the total.
| Mapping job | Scan length | Before GST |
|---|---|---|
| Small office campus | 2.5 km | ₹1,00,000 (4 km minimum is ₹96,000; project floor applies) |
| Junction and approach roads | 14 km | ₹3,36,000 |
| Multi-site estate programme | 110 km, 25% slab | ₹19,80,000 |
Discounts apply to the full scan length once an order clears a slab: 25% beyond 100 km, 40% beyond 500 km and 50% beyond 1,000 km. Drawing sets in CAD/GIS, mobilisation from Faridabad, night work and traffic management each carry their own price on the quote. See the GPR survey price list for the full slab table, and our GPR survey in Chennai page for cable and fibre route work in the city.

Get Underground Utility Mapping in Chennai at Best Prices
Pay for scan lines run
Area mapping is billed on metres of radar line actually scanned, at ₹24 each, with no separate per-area charge.
3D only where it helps
Dense grids are limited to congested junctions or yards, so the rest of the site is mapped at standard spacing.
Drawing sets only if needed
If marks and the signed report are enough, you skip the CAD/GIS cost; if not, it is quoted separately.
Group several sites
Mapping a few campuses or plots under one order shares mobilisation and counts all scan lines toward the slab.
Large programmes, lower metre rate
Past 100 km of total scanning, all metres are discounted by 25%; the cut grows to 40% and 50% at higher slabs.
Owned systems, clear quote
Our 58 company-owned GPR systems mean no hire charges, and night work or traffic arrangements appear as listed extras.

Questions about utility mapping in Chennai
How is utility mapping different from a route survey?
A route survey checks one planned path for anything in the way. Mapping records every service across a whole area, so it suits sites where future works are not yet fixed or where several projects will use the same ground. The field methods are the same; the layout of scan lines and the record differ.
Will the map show a depth for every service?
It shows an approximate depth wherever radar or EM could measure one. Some lines, especially small plastic pipes in wet ground, may be detected in position only, and the record says so. Where an exact depth is essential at a particular point, a trial pit can be dug there on request.
Can a campus stay in normal use while it is mapped?
Usually, yes. The radar cart and locators are quiet and need only a narrow working strip, so roads and parking areas can be done in sections. Busy zones can be scheduled for quieter hours; any night working is charged separately. Site security and permit rules are followed throughout.
Do you name the owner of each mapped line?
Only where there is evidence, such as a marked chamber, a labelled pillar, a cover plate or a matching record. Radar and EM show a line's position, not its owner. Lines without such evidence are recorded by type where possible and otherwise listed as unidentified, rather than given a guessed owner.
Can the map be updated after new works on site?
Yes. Areas affected by new cabling, pipework or drainage can be rescanned and the record revised for those zones only. Keeping the original report and any drawing sets makes the update quicker, because the new scan can be compared directly with what was there before.
Can the record match our site coordinate system?
Tell us the reference you use, such as site grid or the base plan's control points, when you ask for the quote. Ground marks and the report reference your plan, and CAD or GIS sets prepared to your system are quoted as separate drawing work.
