HT/LT Cable Route Survey — Kolkata, West Bengal

HT/LT Cable Route GPR Survey in Kolkata

Before an HT feeder or LT distribution cable is trenched or bored through Kolkata, we trace the services already sitting along its alignment and at each crossing, using company-owned radar and EM locators.

Quick answer

An electric cable route GPR survey in Kolkata finds cables, pipes and ducts already buried along a planned HT or LT alignment, so trenching or HDD avoids them. Mezux Touch does this with owned radar and EM locators at ₹24 a metre (₹32 a metre where an L-section is needed), subject to 4 km and ₹1,00,000 minimums plus GST.

Rates and page checked:

Operator holding an electromagnetic locator over a buried power cable
EM tracing helps confirm energised feeders that radar picks up in Kolkata's wet clay.
Radar survey cart rolling along the kerb of a city road
The cart runs the full length of the proposed feeder trench line.
Diagram of a new cable route crossing beneath a road junction
Junctions on a Kolkata feeder route get extra radar lines across the carriageway.
Longitudinal section showing buried services at varying depths along a route
An L-section adds a depth profile when the cable work order calls for one.

What is checked on an electric cable route GPR survey in Kolkata?

The survey follows the exact line your new cable will take, whether that is an open trench along a footpath, a road-edge cut or an HDD shot under a junction. An electric cable route GPR survey in Kolkata has one purpose: to tell the cabling team what is already in the ground on that line before anyone digs or drills.

On a typical feeder alignment the crew looks for:

  • existing HT and LT cables, including abandoned lengths left behind after earlier upgrades;
  • street-light supply cables and earthing conductors;
  • water mains, service pipes and sewers, which often share the same footpath strip;
  • telecom cables and fibre ducts laid by several operators;
  • chambers, joint bays and buried structures that interrupt a clean trench.

Radar logs anything that differs from the surrounding soil, while EM locating follows conductive lines and is especially useful for cables that are live. The method in detail is set out on our HT/LT cable route GPR survey service page.

Why does Kolkata's power network make route tracing harder?

CESC Ltd supplies most of the city, and WBSEDCL serves the areas around it. A long alignment that runs from the core towards the outskirts can therefore pass over two different distribution networks, laid at different times to different practices. In the older parts of the city, cable has been added, diverted and replaced over many decades, so a single footpath may hold several generations of power cable at varying depths.

That history is the main reason underground electrical line tracing in Kolkata cannot rely on drawings alone. Records may show where a cable was meant to go, not where it ended up after repairs. We treat every detected line as found in the ground, and where we cannot tell which network a cable belongs to, the report says so rather than guessing.

Mezux Touch is not affiliated with CESC Ltd, WBSEDCL, Kolkata Municipal Corporation or any development authority. We are hired by the contractor or owner who needs the information, and we report to them alone.

Which crossings on a Kolkata feeder route need closer scanning?

Along the open run, radar lines follow the alignment with cross-lines at intervals and at every visible chamber or pole. Crossings get a tighter pattern because services bunch together there and because a strike under a road costs far more to fix.

  1. Main road junctions. Several owners' services converge, so we scan a grid over the whole crossing width, not one line.
  2. Near Kolkata Metro structures. Cable routes that pass close to Metro works are scanned only on land where the project owner has the necessary permission, and the report shows where access stopped.
  3. Hooghly bank approaches. Where a feeder heads towards the riverbank, ground is often wetter and made up, so depth reach is noted carefully on those sections.
  4. Drains and culverts. These are recorded so the designer can decide whether the cable should go over or under.

For HDD shots, we scan the bore path and the entry and exit pit areas as far as access allows.

How does soft wet clay affect tracing of buried power cables?

Kolkata sits on soft clay with a high water table. Wet clay absorbs radar energy, so the depth radar can see is shorter than in dry, sandy ground, and small or deep cables can be harder to pick out. We do not quote one depth for the city; the report records how deep radar actually reached on each section of your route.

EM locating helps a great deal here. An energised cable gives off a signal that the locator can follow, and a dead cable can often be traced by applying a signal at an accessible point. Combining both methods raises confidence on the lines that matter most to a cable job. Where a crossing depth must be proved before HDD design, trial pits or boreholes can be added at chosen points on request. For the physics behind it, read how GPR traces HT and LT cables, written for site engineers.

When should a Kolkata cable job be ordered with an L-section?

Some cable work orders ask for a depth profile of the services found along the route, not only their positions. In that case the job is ordered as an L-section GPR survey at ₹32 per metre instead of the standard ₹24. The scan in the field is done once; the extra output is the profile showing how detected services lie along the alignment.

If only part of a long route needs that profile, for example the stretches with HDD crossings, the two survey types can be mixed within one order.

What does HT cable route mapping in Kolkata cost?

HT cable route mapping in Kolkata is charged by the metre of alignment scanned. Being outside Delhi NCR, each order carries two floors: 4 km of length and ₹1,00,000 of value. GST is added to the final bill.

Cable jobSurvey typeAmount before GST
3.5 km LT feederStandard₹1,00,000 (4 km = ₹96,000, lifted to the floor)
7 km HT feederStandard₹1,68,000
7 km HT feederL-section₹2,24,000
220 km cabling programmeStandard, 25% slab₹39,60,000

When the whole order runs beyond 100 km, each of its metres is billed 25% lower; beyond 500 km that becomes 40% and beyond 1,000 km a full 50%. Mobilisation of the crew, any night-time working, permits or traffic control, and any drawing set for these feeders in CAD/GIS form are priced as items of their own. Slabs and a calculator are on the price list.

Who usually asks for this survey in Kolkata?

Most requests come from EPC contractors and cabling firms working on distribution upgrades, from consultants who must certify a route before work starts, and from owners of campuses, hospitals or industrial premises laying their own HT supply. Each gets the same output: ground marks over every detected service and a signed report. If your project also needs fibre or a full site utility record, start from our Kolkata GPR survey page, which links every job type we handle in the city.

STEP 1

Share the feeder alignment

Send the planned cable route as KML or a marked drawing, with its length and any HDD crossings already in the design.

STEP 2

Crew travels from Faridabad

Our own crew and radar systems are mobilised once for all Kolkata stretches, on dates fixed after permissions are in place.

STEP 3

Radar plus EM tracing

Radar covers the full trench line while the EM locator follows live and conductive cables to confirm what radar shows.

STEP 4

Mark services on ground

Each detected cable, pipe or duct is painted or pegged in its utility colour, with approximate depth written alongside.

STEP 5

Signed report handed over

The report lists every find, depth reached on each section and gaps in access, plus the L-section profile where ordered.

FAQ

Questions about HT/LT cable route survey in Kolkata

Can the survey tell an HT cable from an LT cable?

Not reliably from radar alone, because both appear as similar line targets. EM signal strength, depth, routing and visible joints or poles help, and the report states when the voltage class is inferred. Where the distinction is critical, a trial pit at a chosen point can confirm it.

Do you scan inside substation premises in Kolkata?

Yes, where the owner of the premises gives access. Substation yards are scanned on a grid because cables leave in several directions. Safety rules inside the yard are followed as set by the owner, and any area we are not allowed to enter is shown in the report.

Will the survey find abandoned cables?

Often. Radar responds to a cable whether or not it carries current, so dead lengths left after earlier replacement work frequently show up. EM can trace them too if a signal can be applied. We mark such lines as detected but unconfirmed in use unless their status is known.

Is the electric grid underground survey in Kolkata done at night?

Only when the road owner or traffic conditions require it. Most electric grid underground survey work in Kolkata can run in daytime on footpaths and road edges. Night working, where needed, is charged separately from the metre rate and is agreed before the programme is fixed.

How soon after the survey should trenching start?

As soon as practical. Paint marks fade under traffic and rain, and pegs can be disturbed. The signed report keeps the findings, and a stretch can be re-marked on a separate visit, but the safest approach is to excavate while the marks are fresh.

Are you approved by CESC or WBSEDCL for cable surveys?

No. We hold no approval, empanelment or tie-up with CESC Ltd, WBSEDCL or any other DISCOM. Contractors working on their networks hire us directly, and whether our report meets a particular work order is for that contractor and the network owner to confirm.
