Land units — gaj
Gaj to Sq Ft Converter with Plot Size Tables
One gaj (square yard) is 9 sq ft. Convert either way, see the square metres, and check common plot sizes.
Quick AnswerTo convert gaj to sq ft, multiply by 9, because one gaj is one square yard and a yard is 3 ft. That makes 100 gaj equal to 900 sq ft, 200 gaj equal to 1,800 sq ft and 1 gaj equal to 0.8361 sq m. For bigha, kanal, acre and other units in one place, see Land Area Converter.
Gaj to sq ft converter
One gaj is one square yard, and a square yard is exactly 9 sq ft. Multiply gaj by 9 to get square feet; divide square feet by 9 to get gaj. For each unit conversion, the tool below also gives the square metres and the fraction of an acre.
Type in either box and the other one updates.
Why is 1 gaj equal to 9 sq ft?
A yard is 3 feet long, so a square one yard on each side holds three rows of three one-foot squares: nine in all. In property listings across Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and western Uttar Pradesh, “gaj” is the everyday land measurement unit for that square yard. Since 1959 the yard has been fixed at exactly 0.9144 metre, which makes one gaj 0.83612736 sq m. Rounded, 1 sq m is about 1.196 gaj.

Worked examples
Four situations where this area conversion comes up, worked through.
- A 120 gaj builder-floor plot: 120 × 9 = 1,080 sq ft, or 100.34 sq m.
- Plot given by its sides: 30 ft by 50 ft is 1,500 sq ft; 1,500 ÷ 9 = 166.67 gaj. Dealers often round that to 167 gaj, so check which figure the papers carry.
- Allotment letter in metres: 250 sq m × 10.7639 = 2,690.98 sq ft, which is 299 gaj.
- Rate per gaj to rate per sq ft: ₹90,000 per gaj divided by 9 is ₹10,000 per sq ft. Going the other way, multiply the sq ft rate by 9.
Converting land figures by hand invites slips when a deed mixes units. A sale deed may state 150 gaj in words and 1,350 sq ft in figures, and those two agree. If it states 1,500 sq ft instead, the figures describe different plots, and the deed should be queried before you pay. Builder plans in Faridabad and Gurugram often add the area in sq m as well, which should match 150 × 0.8361 = 125.42 sq m.
How does the gaj compare with marla, kanal and bigha?
A revenue marla is 30.25 gaj, a kanal is 605 gaj, an acre is 4,840 gaj and a pucca bigha is 3,025 gaj. Urban real estate in the NCR is sold in gaj, while the same land in a Haryana or Punjab village record sits in kanal and marla. A 10 marla plot is therefore 302.5 gaj, or 2,722.5 sq ft. Farmland, on the other hand, is priced per acre or per bigha in most deals; for that, try our quick bigha to acre conversion.
The village maps that hold those field numbers grew out of the original revenue surveys; for that background, see: Cadastral Survey.
Does the gaj in the papers match the plot on the ground?
Often it does not. A deed may repeat a figure from an old layout, the pillars may have moved, or the seller may quote the area including a share of the road. A few things to check before you pay by the gaj:
- Whether the figure is plot area or covered area. A builder floor’s “super area” is not the land.
- Whether all four sides match the layout plan, not only the frontage.
- Whether the corner pillars sit where the revenue map puts them.
Mezux land demarcation starts at ₹8,000 per plot up to 1 acre, plus GST. The boundary is marked on site, with an area statement in gaj, sq ft and sq m. To book a visit, talk to our project team for your project.
Frequently asked questions
How many sq ft are there in 100 gaj?
900 sq ft, which is 83.61 sq m.
Is a gaj the same as a square yard everywhere?
In property deals, yes: gaj is the everyday name for the square yard of 9 sq ft. Southern and western states more often quote sq ft, cent or guntha instead.
How do I turn gaj into square metres?
Multiply by 0.8361. For example, 150 gaj × 0.8361 = 125.42 sq m.
How many gaj make one marla?
30.25 gaj in the revenue marla of 272.25 sq ft. Some private colonies use a smaller marla of 225 sq ft, which is 25 gaj.
Can I check my plot’s gaj without a tape?
For a first look, take the corner coordinates and work out a rough plot area from the map. Expect an error of several gaj on a small plot.
What gives a gaj figure I can rely on in a deed?
A survey with fixed corners. Read DGPS survey: scope, time and cost for how corners are measured to the centimetre.
