Quick AnswerThis GPS area calculator works out a plot’s area from its corner coordinates. Type latitude and longitude for each corner, tap “Add my current location” at each corner, or paste a list. You get sq m, sq ft, gaj, acre, hectare, bigha, kanal and the perimeter. Phone GPS is good to about 3–10 m, so treat it as an estimate; for units, see details on Land Area Converter.

Enter each corner of the plot as latitude and longitude in decimal degrees, in order around the boundary, and press Calculate. You can also stand on a corner and tap “Add my current location”, or paste a list copied from a map.

The example points form a plot of roughly one acre in Faridabad. Replace them with your own corners, in order around the boundary.

Everything is worked out inside your browser. Your coordinates are not sent anywhere.

How do you measure a plot with the GPS area calculator?

Walk the boundary once, record a coordinate at every corner in the order you reach it, and let the tool close the shape back to the first point. At least three corners are needed; a curved edge or a kink in a wall needs extra points along it.

  1. Start at any corner and stand on the actual boundary mark, not beside it.
  2. Keep the phone still in open sky for 20–30 seconds, then tap “Add my current location”. The tool tells you the accuracy the phone reports.
  3. Walk to the next corner, clockwise or anticlockwise, and repeat. Do not skip around the plot.
  4. Press Calculate. A drawing of your points appears, so a corner entered in the wrong place stands out at once.

From a desk, a long press in Google Maps drops a pin and shows its coordinates, which you can copy into the paste box. Google Earth gives the same figures from its placemark tool.

How does the calculator turn coordinates into area?

It converts each latitude and longitude into metres on a flat grid centred on your plot, then applies the shoelace formula, which adds up the cross products of neighbouring corners. A degree of latitude is roughly 111 km everywhere, but a degree of longitude shrinks with distance from the equator; at Faridabad, near 28.4° N, it is about 98 km. The tool uses the WGS-84 earth radii at your plot’s own latitude, so the flattening error stays far below the GPS error for anything up to a few kilometres across.

The perimeter is the sum of the straight edges between consecutive corners. The area conversion covers gaj, acre, hectare, Haryana pucca bigha and kanal–marla, using the fixed value of each land measurement unit. For other states and units, the unit conversion is done by the converter linked above.

How accurate is phone GPS for plot area?

A phone in open sky fixes its position to within about 3–10 metres in most conditions; near buildings, trees or a high wall it can be worse. Survey-grade DGPS works to 1–2 cm. On a small plot that difference decides whether the number means anything. The table shows what one side moving outward does to a square plot.

Square plotSideOne side 5 m out (phone)One side 2 cm out (DGPS)
100 gaj plot9.1 m46 sq m (54.7%)0.18 sq m (0.22%)
500 gaj plot20.4 m102 sq m (24.5%)0.41 sq m (0.1%)

10 acres201.2 m1,006 sq m (2.5%)4.02 sq m (0.01%)

Table note: real phone errors fall on every corner at once and partly cancel, but the pattern holds. For the field method and deliverables, read more about land survey services.

A phone reading is therefore fine for judging a farm of several acres and almost useless for a 100 gaj house plot. Our difference between GPS and DGPS guide explains why a fixed base receiver removes most of the error. For the prices and the process, see DGPS survey: scope, time and cost.

Tips for steadier readings

  • Switch on high-accuracy location and keep the phone away from your body and any car roof.
  • Take each corner twice, a few minutes apart. If the two readings differ by more than 5 m, take a third.
  • Avoid narrow lanes between tall buildings; signals bouncing off walls pull the fix sideways.
  • Where a corner sits under a tree, measure a clear point a known distance away and note it.

When is a map figure not enough?

Whenever money, a boundary wall or a legal record depends on it. Converting land coordinates into an area is easy; proving where the corners lie is not. A real estate sale or purchase, a bank valuation and a partition between family members all need corners fixed by a surveyor. A mutation file and a dispute with a neighbour need the same, with the corners tied to the revenue map.

Our DGPS plot survey starts at ₹12,000 for up to 1 acre and is ₹2,500 per acre from 1 to 5 acres. Land demarcation starts at ₹8,000 per plot up to 1 acre. Rates exclude GST. In Delhi NCR a surveyor is on site the same day or the next working day, and our DGPS survey in Faridabad team works out of Sector 41. If the plot is already on your screen, talk to our project team for your project and send the coordinates with your enquiry.

Frequently asked questions

Is my location sent to Mezux when I use the tool?

No. The calculation runs inside your browser and the page sends nothing. Your phone only shares its location after you tap the button and allow it.

How many points do I need?

Three is the minimum. Add a point at every corner and extra points along any curved or bent edge; more points follow the shape better.

Why does the area change each time I measure?

Phone GPS drifts by a few metres from minute to minute. On a small plot that drift is a large share of the area, which is why we suggest taking each corner twice.

Does the order of the points matter?

Yes. Enter them in the order you walk around the boundary. If the lines cross, the tool warns you, because a crossed shape gives a wrong area.

Can I use this figure in a sale deed or registry?

No. Treat it as a check only. For records you need a surveyor; see what a land demarcation costs.

Can I paste coordinates from Google Earth or a KML?

Yes, as long as each line holds latitude then longitude in decimal degrees. KML files list longitude first, so swap the two values; the tool warns you if they look reversed.
