Where does 43,560 come from?
From the old surveyor's chain: an acre was a strip one chain (66 ft) wide and one furlong (660 ft) long, and 66 × 660 = 43,560. Ten square chains make an acre, which is why surveys done with a 66 ft chain produced tidy figures. Today the acre is tied to the metre through the international foot of 1959, giving 4,046.8564224 sq m.
The shape does not matter, only the area. A square acre is about 208.71 ft on each side, a useful figure when you are standing on a field and trying to picture it.

Worked examples
Converting land figures to and from acres comes down to one number, 43,560.
- A 0.35-acre plot: 0.35 × 43,560 = 15,246 sq ft.
- A 2-acre layout: 87,120 sq ft gross. If roads and open space take 40%, about 52,272 sq ft is left for plots.
- Price per acre to price per sq ft: ₹1.2 crore per acre ÷ 43,560 = about ₹275 per sq ft.

How does an acre compare with local units?
The acre itself is the same everywhere, but the local land measurement unit it is split into is not. In Tamil Nadu and Kerala an acre is 100 cents; for that, use our Mezux cent to sq ft converter. In Maharashtra, Karnataka and Gujarat it is 40 guntha. In Haryana and Punjab it is 8 kanal or 160 marla, and a consolidated killa is one acre. A West Bengal katha of 720 sq ft goes into an acre 60.5 times. The bigha is the awkward one: a pucca bigha of 27,225 sq ft is 0.625 acre. Acres in Haryana and Punjab records
In consolidated villages the acre is built into the map itself: each killa of 36 × 40 karam is one acre, 8 kanal or 160 marla. A holding written as four full killas is therefore 4 acres, 1,74,240 sq ft, before any road or watercourse is deducted. Partial killas carry kanal-marla figures, so 2 killas plus 3-10 is 2 acres plus 70 marla, about 2.44 acres in all.
Does the acreage on paper match the field?
Often only roughly. Old records were drawn at coarse scales and boundaries shift over the years. The figure in a real estate advertisement may include a share of a road or a neighbour's strip.
