Quick AnswerFor kanal to marla, multiply by 20: one kanal is 20 marla, so 3 kanal are 60 marla and 4 kanal 13 marla are 93 marla. With the revenue marla of 272.25 sq ft a kanal is 5,445 sq ft, and 8 kanal make one acre (a killa). For bigha, gaj and other units, read about Land Area Converter.

Kanal to marla in one line

One kanal is 20 marla, so multiply kanal by 20 and add any loose marla. With the revenue marla of 272.25 sq ft, one kanal is 5,445 sq ft and eight kanal make an acre. For the unit conversion, the first box below adds kanal and marla together; the second splits a marla total back into kanal and marla.

How do you read a figure like 4-13 in a jamabandi?

The number before the dash is kanal and the number after it is marla, so 4-13 means 4 kanal 13 marla: 93 marla, or 25,319.25 sq ft. This kanal–marla notation is the normal way area appears in the jamabandi and mutation papers of Haryana and Punjab. Kanal and marla are also used in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. A field’s identity comes from its rectangle and killa numbers; more on Khasra and Killa Numbers explains how to read them.

Below the marla sits the sarsai, the smallest land measurement unit in this system: nine sarsai make a marla, and one sarsai is 30.25 sq ft, a square karam of 5.5 ft each way.

Which marla does your plot use?

Village records in Haryana and Punjab use the 272.25 sq ft marla. Some private colonies, real estate listings and references use a smaller marla of 225 sq ft, so a “10 marla” plot can be 2,722.5 or 2,250 sq ft. Always check which one the layout plan and the sale deed use.

Worked examples

Converting land figures from kanal and marla is mostly arithmetic with 20 and 8.

  • Mutation entry 7-4: 7 × 20 + 4 = 144 marla = 39,204 sq ft, or 0.9 acre.
  • A 2.5 acre holding: 2.5 × 8 = 20 kanal = 400 marla.
  • Splitting 93 marla between three heirs: 31 marla each, written 1-11.
  • A plot of 3,000 sq ft: 3,000 ÷ 272.25 = 11.02 marla.

In Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan the equivalent pair is bigha and biswa, which works on the same twenty-to-one idea; see biswa to bigha.

Two quick area conversion checks: ₹10 lakh per marla is about ₹33,058 per gaj (10,00,000 ÷ 30.25), and 1,000 gaj is about 33.06 marla, or 1 kanal 13.06 marla.

From kanal on paper to a boundary on the ground

The jamabandi tells you how much land you hold; only a demarcation shows where it is. In consolidated villages the killa lines are fixed on the revenue map, and a surveyor rebuilds them on the ground from known points before marking your kanal. Our page on land demarcation rates and scope sets out the fees: from ₹8,000 per plot up to 1 acre, and ₹2,000 per extra acre, plus GST. Faridabad and the rest of Delhi NCR get a surveyor the same day or within one working day. To arrange one, contact our survey team for your project.

Frequently asked questions

How many marla are in 1 kanal?

20 marla, so a kanal of 5,445 sq ft splits into twenty equal parts.

How many sq ft is 1 kanal?

Which survey fixes the corners precisely?

A DGPS survey tied to known points. See DGPS survey for scope and rates.

How many kanal are in one hectare?

About 19.77 kanal (1,07,639 sq ft ÷ 5,445), slightly under 20.

How many marla is 1,000 gaj?

About 33.06 marla, or 1 kanal 13.06 marla, using 30.25 gaj per marla.
