Quick AnswerFor bigha to acre, divide the bigha’s square feet by 43,560. A pucca bigha (Haryana, Punjab, UP, Rajasthan, Bihar) is 0.625 acre, so 1.6 bigha make an acre. Gujarat’s bigha is 0.4 acre, West Bengal and Assam 0.331, Madhya Pradesh 0.275 and Himachal 0.2. To compare every unit, learn about Land Area Converter.

How many acres are in one bigha?

It depends on the state. A pucca bigha (Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar) is 0.625 acre, and Gujarat and kachha Rajasthan bighas are 0.4 acre. West Bengal and Assam use 0.331 acre, Madhya Pradesh 0.275 acre and Himachal Pradesh 0.2 acre. Pick the state in the converter and type either figure; the unit conversion runs both ways.

This table gives both directions for each state value the converter uses. Hectares are added to each area conversion because Uttar Pradesh and several other states keep their land records in hectares.

Why is one state’s bigha bigger than another’s?

Each region fixed its bigha, a traditional land measurement unit, by its own local yardstick, and those choices survived into the revenue records. The pucca bigha is a square 55 yards (165 ft) on each side, 3,025 sq yd, which is exactly five eighths of an acre. That is why 1.6 pucca bigha make an acre. In Gujarat the bigha is 16 guntha, so 2.5 of them make an acre, and our guntha to sq ft calculator handles the smaller unit. West Bengal and Assam use a bigha of 1,600 sq yd, so an acre holds 3.025 of them.

If you need the bigha in square feet instead, the Mezux bigha to sq ft converter shows sq ft, sq yd and sq m side by side.

Worked examples

Converting land areas from bigha follows the same two steps every time: find the state value, then multiply.

  1. 3 pucca bigha in Rajasthan: 3 × 0.625 = 1.875 acres, or 0.7587 hectare.
  2. 12 bigha in West Bengal: 12 × 14,400 = 1,72,800 sq ft; divided by 43,560 that is 3.967 acres.
  3. 7.5 bigha in Gujarat: 7.5 × 0.4 = exactly 3 acres.
  4. Going the other way, 2 acres in Madhya Pradesh: 2 × 3.63 = 7.26 bigha.

Revenue records in some districts still show land in bigha, while recent sale deeds often state acres. When two documents disagree, convert both figures to square feet first and then to acres, so the comparison uses one base unit.

Check the record before you convert

Convert from the figure in the land record, not from what a real estate dealer says, and confirm which bigha the village used. Revenue records identify each field by a number, and in Haryana and Punjab by rectangle and killa as well; see: Khasra and Killa Numbers for how those work. When the field on the ground and the record disagree, the record wins in a dispute, so the boundary has to be fixed against it. Our page on getting a land demarcation done right explains the steps; demarcation starts at ₹8,000 per plot up to 1 acre and ₹2,000 per extra acre, plus GST. Frequently asked questions

How many bigha make one acre?

1.6 pucca bigha, 2.5 in Gujarat, 3.025 in West Bengal or Assam, about 3.63 in Madhya Pradesh, 4.8 kachha bigha in Haryana or Punjab and 5 in Himachal Pradesh.

Is 1 bigha more or less than an acre?

Less, in every state value used here. The largest common bigha, the pucca bigha, is five eighths of an acre.

What is 10 bigha in acres?

6.25 acres for a pucca bigha, 4 acres in Gujarat, 3.31 acres in West Bengal and 2.75 acres in Madhya Pradesh.

How can I check the bigha figure of my field?

Mark the corners and run a map-based area check, then compare it with the record. It is good to a few metres per corner.

Which survey gives an area I can use in court or a loan file?

A survey with corners fixed by DGPS and tied to the revenue map. Read more about DGPS survey.

Why does the UP bigha differ between websites?

Some guides round the pucca bigha to 27,000 sq ft, and some western districts use a smaller local bigha. The khatauni gives area in hectares, which avoids the problem.
