Quick AnswerA Greater Chennai Corporation GPR survey shows where Metrowater pipes, TNPDCL cables, corporation drains and operator ducts run ahead of any road cut in the city. Its 200 wards span 15 zones and roughly 426 sq km of low coastal land with shallow groundwater. Ground penetrating radar (GPR) passes, locator tracing and road paint all end up on one drawing; there is more about utility mapping.

What does a Greater Chennai Corporation utility survey cover?

A Greater Chennai Corporation utility survey records everything buried under one road or plot before any breaker touches the surface. On an Anna Salai footpath or a T. Nagar side street, the crew runs radar lines and clamps a locator onto live cables. Each service is sprayed on the surface and drawn with its offset, depth estimate and, where confirmed, its owner.

The corporation was inaugurated on 29 September 1688 under a royal charter and is often described as the oldest municipal body in the Commonwealth outside the United Kingdom. After its 2011 expansion it covers about 426 sq km, with 200 wards in 15 zones grouped into North, Central and South regions, run from the Ripon Building. Its councillors were elected in February 2022.

Who owns which line under a Chennai road?

Often several bodies, and only some of them are the corporation.

How does Chennai's coastal ground affect the scan?

Chennai's shallow groundwater is the main limit on radar depth. As a geophysical method, the radar sends electromagnetic waves downward; buried objects return reflected signals, and their travel time gives each depth. The city lies on coastal sand, river alluvium and clay along the Cooum, the Adyar and the Buckingham Canal. Dry sand suits radar well, but saturated sand and marine clay have high electrical conductivity and soak up the signal. A deep sewer clear in April may be faint in November.

Illustration: sand and marine clay near the Adyar stay damp all year and soak through in the north-east monsoon, which is why deep sewers are best scanned outside October to December.

When a deep line matters, the job is booked for a dry spell, a lower-frequency antenna goes on and manhole inverts are taped by hand. How the seasons change each district's soil is recorded under what we do for GPR survey in Chennai.

Which jobs in the corporation need a survey most?

Any work that opens a busy road, and storm-drain work above all. Since the 2015 floods the city has greatly extended its drain network, and every new drain crosses water, sewer and power services. Footpath rebuilds, fibre and HT routes, main-road building plots and checks of utility lines beside the 118.9 km of Phase 2 metro construction projects make up most other calls.

Where does the survey sit in road-cut permission?

Ahead of the road-cut request, so the zone office sees every service the trench meets. The contractor or utility lodges the file, and our sheet supplies the alignment with each crossing and its depth. The corporation sets and revises its own procedure and charges, so none appear here. Each field step is laid out if you read our utility survey guide for Chennai. Mixed jobs can be issued as a layered drawing, described in more about utility mapping.

How accurate will the drawing be?

Positions are good to within a few tens of centimetres, and depths are estimates stated line by line. Radar times each echo, and the depth hangs on the wave speed in the soil, which can swing between dry sand, wet sand and clay within metres.

A depth taped in an open manhole or valve chamber corrects the radar figures around it. Each line is then graded as seen in a pit, traced by locator, radar only, or suspected and flagged for a trial pit.

The grading shows where hand digging is needed and where a machine can work. Small plastic pipes set deep in saturated clay may escape the radar, and in that case the drawing records the gap rather than inventing an unseen service.

What does it cost in Chennai?

₹24 per metre for a standard scan and ₹32 per metre for an L-section, with a minimum of ₹1,00,000 per project, GST extra. Long programmes get a discount on the whole order: 25% above 100 km, 40% above 500 km and 50% above 1,000 km.

Standard scanning of 4.2 km along an MTC bus road totals ₹1,00,800. Two kilometres of L-section works out to ₹64,000, which lifts the invoice to the ₹1,00,000 floor. Radar can be rolling on a corporation road the day you confirm, or one working day afterwards at most, because our engineer is Chennai-based and home-working. Mobilisation, if chargeable, is a separate entry in the quotation.

Are levels taken for Chennai storm-water drain work?

Yes. On low, flat ground near the sea a storm drain works only if its levels are right, so every crossing gets a reduced level. GCC's many new drains since 2015 often run beside older sewers, Metrowater pipes and cables. Control is set from a benchmark with DGPS survey in Chennai, and a total station level survey runs along the drain route. Road crown, outfall invert and the crown of every obstructing service all reach the designer as reduced levels.

Do you work beyond the corporation's limits?

Yes, across the metropolitan area. Pallavaram, Pammal, Chitlapakkam and other southern suburbs belong to a different corporation now; read Tambaram Municipal Corporation utility survey by Mezux Touch for those suburbs.

We have traced buried utilities since 2003. Chennai crews are salaried and draw on a company fleet of 58 GPR units. Quality, environment and safety audits follow ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001, and no shift goes to outsiders. GCC has placed work orders with Mezux in its own name. Firms digging Chennai roads under contract, their consultants and the line-owning utilities hire us as well. Frequently asked questions

Is the Greater Chennai Corporation the old Madras Corporation?

Yes. It traces back to 1688 and took its present name after the city's expansion. Older drawings may still say Corporation of Chennai or Madras.

Does monsoon season stop survey work?

Seldom, though soaked ground shortens radar reach and waterlogged chambers are awkward to lift. A ground penetrating radar survey for deep lines is best booked for drier weeks.

Which areas of Chennai do you cover?

The whole city and suburbs; see survey coverage in Chennai, with details.

Will the Chennai drawing match our design coordinates?

Yes. Fixed control points bring the services onto your design grid; see more on DGPS survey.

Can radar find a sewer under a concrete road?

In most cases. Reinforcement shows clearly in the GPR data, while deep sewers in wet clay may need manhole measurements as well.

Do you survey narrow streets in old areas like George Town?

Yes. The radar cart is hand-pushed, so any George Town lane a person can walk can be scanned for underground utilities.
