Quick AnswerAn Avadi Municipal Corporation GPR survey reveals the pipes, drains, cables and ducts in the path of an open trench or a bore under the tracks. The suburban railway and the defence campuses make many jobs here crossings, so pits and bore lines are scanned first. The merits of ground penetrating radar (GPR), locators and trial pits are compared in our underground utility detection methods guide.

Who governs Avadi, and how large is the corporation?

The Avadi City Municipal Corporation runs the western Chennai suburb of Avadi in Tiruvallur district, and an Avadi Municipal Corporation utility survey covers roads and plots inside its limits. Avadi was a special grade municipality until June 2019, when a Governor's ordinance made it a corporation with its existing 48 wards. Its area was about 65 sq km, and its first corporation council was elected in February 2022. (Sources: DT Next, 19 June 2019; The News Minute, 22 February 2022.)

That boundary is set to grow. In January 2025 the state announced that Poonamallee, Tiruverkadu and Thirunindravur municipalities and 17 village panchayats would merge into Avadi. The enlarged area would be about 181.82 sq km. We could not confirm that the merger is complete, so sites in those towns are checked with you before quoting. (Source: DT Next, 3 January 2025.)

Why do defence land and railways shape Avadi jobs?

A large share of land and services in Avadi belongs to bodies other than the corporation. The town is known for defence manufacturing and research, including the Heavy Vehicles Factory and the Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment, whose campus services are known only to them. The Chennai Central to Arakkonam suburban line runs through Avadi, Pattabiram and Hindu College stations. Every road or pipe crossing it needs the railway's consent.

Many utility routes in Avadi therefore go under the tracks or a campus road instead of across them, which puts a premium on knowing what sits near the pits.

Illustration: Avadi's suburban railway and defence land make trenchless crossings common; the survey confirms what lies near each pit and along the bore path.

Near the Pattabiram and Hindu College tracks, each signal or power cable is followed with an electromagnetic locator before a pit is opened. Our approach is set out in underground cable detection at a glance.

What does a survey find along Avadi's roads?

A mix of older town services and newer suburban lines laid as housing spread west. House connections and water mains from older schemes sit beside sewers in newly drained areas, storm drains near lake inlets such as Paruthipattu, power cables and fibre ducts. Few paper records carry the full set, so each line on our sheet notes how it was confirmed.

How does the ground in western Chennai behave?

Drier and firmer than near the coast, with wet patches round tanks and low ground after the monsoon. Western Chennai's drier ground favours this geophysical technique, whose radar waves picture underground utilities as far as soil moisture allows. Inland, groundwater sits lower, so the radar sees deeper than on central Chennai's coastal streets. Around lakes, old tank beds and low layouts, the soil stays wet through the October to December monsoon, and its higher electrical conductivity shortens the view.

Antenna and line spacing are chosen stretch by stretch, and open chambers give measured depths to check the GPR data. For Chennai beyond Avadi, see what we do for GPR survey in Chennai. Field method is covered if you read more on utility survey guide for Chennai.

Where does an Avadi survey fit in permission and tender work?

Ahead of the application or bid, so the alignment and its crossings are known. The contractor or utility files any road-cut request with the corporation and any railway or defence consent with those bodies, and our drawing supports each file. Fees and forms are set by the issuing office, so they are not reproduced here. Metropolitan schemes and layouts are dealt with under CMDA utility survey: scope, time and cost.

How is an Avadi survey priced?

₹24 per metre standard, ₹32 per metre for an L-section, a ₹1,00,000 minimum per project and GST extra. Length lowers the rate on the entire order. Above 100 km it drops by 25%, above 500 km by 40%, and above 1,000 km by 50%.

A 9 km standard scan of main roads costs ₹2,16,000. A 105 km fibre route at standard rate falls from ₹25,20,000 at list to ₹18,90,000 after the 25% discount. A single railway crossing of a few hundred metres is charged the project floor unless it joins a bigger order. Mobilisation, if an Avadi job attracts it, is a separate item in the quotation. A home-based Chennai staff member takes Avadi work from the go-ahead, starting no later than the next business day.

What should you have ready?

The route, the reason and the consents you already hold. A KMZ file or map pins will do for pricing. Railway or defence land can be scanned only after the owner agrees, so your consent letter comes first, and any old municipal drawing guides extra cross-lines.

Name the end use as well. A road-cut file needs crossings and depths along one line, and a layout needs a full site plan. A rail bore needs a clearance profile, so the quote states the deliverable and time on site.

How is a rail crossing tied to railway chainage?

By surveying the track and the bore line on one grid, then reporting the crossing against the railway's kilometre marks. A railway application asks where a pipe or cable passes, how deep it runs below the rail and how far the pits sit from the track. Control on either side comes from DGPS for western Chennai crossings. A total station rail-level survey then records rail levels, the formation edge, drains and pit positions, and radar finds near the pits complete the crossing drawing.

Who carries out GPR survey on Avadi Municipal Corporation jobs?

Mezux staff crews, using radars and rigs that belong to us. We have located buried utilities since 2003 and never sub-let field work. Our kit numbers 58 radar units and 18 HDD rigs, run under audited ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001 systems. Avadi's own corporation has issued Mezux work orders. Contractors, consultants and utilities that need a road cut or a bore under the tracks for construction projects there hire us as well. For Avadi utility mapping on a crossing or a road, send us your Chennai site details.

Frequently asked questions

When did Avadi become a municipal corporation?

In June 2019, when an ordinance upgraded the special grade municipality, keeping its 48 wards (Source: DT Next, 19 June 2019).

Are Poonamallee and Tiruverkadu now part of Avadi?

A merger was announced in January 2025 (Source: DT Next, 3 January 2025). Its completion could not be confirmed, so current limits are checked before quoting and before any utility maps are issued.

Do you also work elsewhere in Chennai?

Yes. Every suburb we serve appears on our page on survey coverage in Chennai, in detail.

Should I order a topographic survey too?

Often, for layout or road design work. Before booking, read these questions to ask before a topographic survey.

Can you scan inside a defence campus?

Not without the establishment's written consent, which the client obtains. Certain utility lines inside can be verified by that establishment alone.

Can a bore under the railway be surveyed in one visit?

In most cases, once the railway has agreed. A ground penetrating radar survey covers both approaches and marks the pit positions in a single mobilisation.
