Control pairs on a Chennai corridor

Quick AnswerA DGPS survey in Chennai sets marks good to one or two centimetres on the UTM 44N grid, from an Oragadam warehouse site to a stretch of the ECR. Their levels refer to MSL, which matters on a coast that sits barely above the tide. Corridors get marks in pairs that see one another. Plots up to 1 acre start from ₹12,000 plus GST. Our Chennai colleague can start the same day or inside one working day. Main service page: DGPS survey for Chennai sites.

Why commission a DGPS survey in Chennai?

It gives a factory campus, a DTCP layout, a road widening or a cable route one shared set of marks, each within about 1–2 cm. Every later sheet then agrees with every other. Detail survey, design and setting-out then hang from those points instead of from a gate post or a compound wall.

The need has grown with the city. In October 2022 the state approved extending the Chennai Metropolitan Area to about 5,904 sq km, adding more than a thousand villages to the planning area. Land at the edges, from the Sriperumbudur and Oragadam belt to the coast in the south, is being drawn up for warehouses, plants and housing. Those drawings must join up with roads and neighbours. Coordinates are the common language, and satellite-based positioning supplies them; the differential step lifts them from metre level to centimetre level.

How does Tamil Nadu's CORS network help?

Tamil Nadu's Survey and Land Records Department says it runs permanent reference stations (CORS) at 70 sites in the state. Such ground-based reference stations can stream corrections to a rover with no base on site. Its own resurvey teams lean on it. On a private site, if such a correction feed is open to us and the phone signal holds, our rover may use it. Even so, most of our Chennai work keeps our own base station on a nearby mark, for three reasons. It is an independent check, it carries on when mobile data drops, and the client can see the one mark that everything traces back to.

Which coordinate system suits a Chennai project?

Geographic WGS84 values plus eastings and northings on UTM 44N, the zone in which Chennai falls at roughly 80.3° E. Many Chennai drawings also need levels above mean sea level, and on a coastal city that is not a detail. Large parts of Velachery, the Adyar banks and the northern shore lie a few metres above the Bay of Bengal. There, 30 cm of height error is enough to drop a plinth below a flood mark. Receiver heights are converted through a geoid model, and we run onto a published bench mark whenever one is within reach, printing the misclosure on the sheet.

If your consultant has already fixed a site grid, share its parameters. The file will carry both that grid and UTM, the conversion written in the title block.

Where do control pairs go on long Chennai jobs?

In twos along the route, each mark visible from its partner, so the detail crew can set up on any pair and begin.

This layout suits road widening, storm-water drain routes, pipeline alignments and frontage surveys along new transit lines such as Metro Phase 2. It also suits land being assembled for big projects, such as the proposed greenfield airport at Parandur, where plots spread over several villages must later be joined. Live cables lie under most such alignments. Tracing them before excavation is explained on our page on GPR survey in Chennai, and no radar job is billed under ₹1,00,000. Clients with Bengaluru sites can use our list of questions to ask before a DGPS survey in Bengaluru.

What can block the sky on a Chennai site?

Not hills here but palms, mango orchards and curtain-wall towers. Along the ECR and in the older suburbs, dense coconut crowns soak up and scatter GPS signals. Down the OMR IT stretch, mirror glass bounces it about, which surveyors call multipath. Each GPS receiver is therefore set where nothing overhangs: a junction island, a permitted rooftop, the centre of an empty plot. Weather matters too. Chennai takes most of its rain from the north-east monsoon, roughly October to December, and waterlogged access roads can delay fieldwork more than the rain itself.

What comes after the marks are in?

The moment the site turns into crowded streets, or your engineer asks for the full lie of the land. In the packed lanes of Sowcarpet or Triplicane, an instrument sighting from the satellite pair is quicker for compound walls and building corners. Read booking a total station survey in Chennai. Contours, drains and plot-wide levels are the job of our topographic survey in Chennai team, who can work off the same marks on one trip.

What does DGPS work in Chennai cost?

Small plots start at ₹12,000. Between 1 and 5 acres, the DGPS survey cost per acre is ₹2,500 with the same ₹12,000 floor, and route control is ₹3,000 a point. All figures are plus GST.

  • Plot up to 1 acre: from ₹12,000.
  • 1–5 acres: ₹2,500 per acre; a 4-acre warehouse plot works out at ₹10,000, so the ₹12,000 minimum applies.
  • Route control: ₹3,000 per point; six pairs along a 3 km road (12 points) come to ₹36,000.
  • Mobilisation, if applicable: a line in your written quote.

The finished schedule and sheets normally follow inside three working days. Once we know the site (a KMZ is ideal) and what the marks are for, you can get a written quote for Chennai.

Frequently asked questions

Do you use the Tamil Nadu CORS network?

Yes, where a correction service is open for the job. DGPS works best here with our own reference station running alongside as an independent check.

Can you deliver in our project's local grid?

Yes. Send the grid details; we deliver in that grid and UTM, with the transformation stated.

Can you also check a plot against patta and FMB?

Patta and FMB matching sits with our boundary team: who to call for land surveyor in Chennai.

What does DGPS stand for?

Differential Global Positioning System; there is a short note with DGPS full form explained.

How close together should control pairs be?

Close enough to see each other, typically 100–300 m apart, with pairs every few hundred metres along the route.

Does the October–December rain delay work?

The north-east monsoon, roughly October to December, can flood access roads; we plan around it where the client allows.
