Quick AnswerSet up on known stations, the instrument behind a total station survey in Chennai measures horizontal and vertical angles plus slope distance. It produces millimetre-level positions and heights even where buildings or trees block the satellites. We use it for factory layouts, column stake-out and level grids. A plot up to 1 acre starts from ₹10,000 plus GST. The full method sits on total station survey for Chennai sites.

When does a site in Chennai need a total station survey?

Choose a total station survey in Chennai when walls, trees or tight streets shut out the sky, or when column lines and floor levels demand millimetres. Because it reads its own angles and distances, it keeps going where GNSS receivers lose lock.

That describes most of the old city. In T. Nagar, Mylapore or George Town, the plot is hemmed in on three sides and a DGPS rover struggles near the walls. Out on the IT corridor or in the industrial belt, the sky opens up and a DGPS survey often sets the control while the total station fills in detail. Most jobs use both, in that order.

How does the instrument fix a point?

From three readings: a horizontal angle, a vertical angle and a distance to a prism. The total station is set over a known station, sighted on a second known station (the backsight), then turned to each target. The software turns the angle and distance into coordinates, and the vertical angle gives the height difference. Instruments of this class are specified at about 5 mm + 3 ppm for distance, precise enough for foundation stake-out from construction layouts.

Which Chennai jobs do we use it for?

Factory layouts, building stake-out, levels on low-lying plots and detail surveys beside new infrastructure.

  • Ambattur and Guindy industrial estates: tight older units where machine bays, sheds and drains have to be drawn before an extension.
  • Sriperumbudur and Oragadam: large factory sites west of the city, where we stake out grid lines, pile points and road edges for the contractor.
  • Flood-prone neighbourhoods: after the 2015 floods many owners in areas like Velachery want plinth and road levels recorded before deciding how high to build.
  • Along Metro Phase 2: the first stretch, Poonamallee to Vadapalani, opened in October 2026. Properties beside the wider network, still under construction, often need their frontage and levels on record.

Before any excavation on these sites, an underground utility survey checks whether services run underneath. Ground penetrating radar does that work; see GPR survey in Chennai to learn how the scan works locally.

What makes levels so critical on Chennai plots?

Because the city is flat and close to sea level, a few centimetres decide where water goes. Coastal clay near the shore and the river mouths holds water after heavy rain, while rocky ground shows up further inland. With a benchmark-tied grid of spot levels and contour lines, the architect can see the corner that will flood first and the height the plinth has to reach. A total station records those heights in the same set-up it uses for the plan, so the topographic survey and the detail plan arrive as one drawing.

The same grid helps when a compound wall or internal road is being regraded. The contractor works from pegged levels, not guesswork.

What does a total station survey in Chennai cost?

A plot up to 1 acre starts from ₹10,000; each further acre is ₹3,000; stake-out is ₹8,000 per crew-day. Each figure is plus GST; any mobilisation/travel cost, if applicable, appears as its own item in the written quote.

  • Detail survey, plot up to 1 acre: from ₹10,000
  • Each extra acre: ₹3,000
  • Layout or stake-out work: ₹8,000 per crew-day

A 4-acre factory plot in Oragadam, for example, comes to ₹19,000 for the detail survey; marking out its column grid over two days adds ₹16,000. The total is whatever your written quote says.

How does the field day unfold?

A two- or three-person crew sets control, observes from as few stations as the site allows, and checks itself before leaving. The surveyor first places or finds the control points, then moves the instrument from station to station. Each set-up closes back on a known point, so any error shows up on site. A second person carries the prism pole to every corner, column, drain and level point. Before packing up, a handful of points are re-measured from a different station. Back at the office the readings are reduced, plotted in AutoCAD and checked against the field sketch before anything is issued.

How do you get the job started?

Send the location, any drawing you already have and the purpose. Stake-out jobs need the architectural or structural drawing as a DWG file, grid and coordinates included. For a detail survey, a site pin and a short list of features is enough. The government's FMB or town survey sketch helps if a boundary will appear on the drawing. When the papers are together, send us your Chennai site details; an engineer then replies with the method we propose.

Have work in another southern city as well? Mention it in the same enquiry; we keep team members in other southern cities too, and one quote can often cover both sites.

Frequently asked questions

Which suits a Chennai plot better, a total station or DGPS?

DGPS works well on open land, whereas cramped city plots and stake-out want a total station; the two are often combined. A fuller comparison: details on DGPS vs Total Station.

Can you mark column positions on a new building site?

Yes. We take the grid from the structural drawing and peg each column or pile point on the ground, then check them before concreting.

Do you also do boundary and patta-related surveys?

Yes. A boundary survey or land survey against the patta and FMB sketch is handled through Private Land Surveyor in Chennai.

Will you survey inside a Sriperumbudur factory while it runs?

Yes, within your safety rules and shift timings. Inside sheds we carry coordinates in from control points set outside.

Will the levels be on a known benchmark?

Yes. We tie levels to the benchmark you name or to DGPS control, and state the datum on the drawing.
