Quick AnswerA Tambaram Municipal Corporation GPR survey tells you which pipes, drains, cables and ducts a trench will meet, whether the dig is in Pammal, Sembakkam or East Tambaram. Charnockite near Pallavaram and soft lake clay near Chitlapakkam need different ground penetrating radar (GPR) settings, so each street is set up on its own. Output is a layered CAD or GIS file; learn about CAD and GIS utility mapping.

What is the Tambaram Municipal Corporation?

It is the civic body for Chennai's southern gateway, formed in November 2021 from five municipalities and five town panchayats. The Tambaram City Municipal Corporation Ordinance was notified on 3 November 2021. It joined the municipalities of Tambaram, Pallavaram, Pammal, Anakaputhur and Sembakkam with the town panchayats of Chitlapakkam, Madambakkam, Perungalathur, Peerkankaranai and Tiruneermalai. The corporation lies in Chengalpattu district, within the Chennai Metropolitan Area, and held its first council election in February 2022.

Some villages from the St Thomas Mount panchayat union were proposed for inclusion but left out, so limits are checked with you when a site is near the edge.

Which zones does Tambaram have?

Seventy wards grouped into five zones: Pammal, Pallavaram, Sembakkam, Perungalathur and East Tambaram. Each zone has its own character underground, set by how and when it grew.

ZoneCharacterUsual finds underground
PallavaramHills, cantonment edge, airport sideShallow rock, older pipes, HT feeders
PammalDense residential streetsNarrow lanes, many house connections
SembakkamLake-side colonies, newer streetsWet clay, storm drains, new sewer lines
East TambaramOlder streets near the railwayMixed old services near the station
PerungalathurSouthern growth along the highwayFresh layouts with sparse records

Why does the ground change so much within Tambaram?

The corporation spans both hard-rock hills and old lake beds. Pallavaram and St Thomas Mount are the type locality of charnockite, a hard crystalline rock named after Job Charnock's tombstone, which was cut from it. GPR, a geophysical method, reads such rock clearly because dry crystalline ground passes electromagnetic waves with little loss. A few kilometres away, colonies around the Chitlapakkam, Sembakkam and Madambakkam lakes stand on wet silt and clay, where high electrical conductivity makes the signal fade fast.

Near the Pallavaram hills Near a lake bed Thin soil, rock fill Hard crystalline rock Radar reach Shallow pipe Silty fill Wet clay, high water Radar fades Deep sewer: check at manholes
Illustration: within one corporation the radar meets very different ground, which is why we set antennas and depth checks street by street.

Each needs its own plan. Tight line spacing on the rocky Pallavaram streets sorts boulders from pipes. By the lakes, a lower-frequency antenna and manhole depth checks take over, and any unconfirmed deep line is noted. For the wider city, see GPR survey in Chennai.

What sits under GST Road and the railway side?

The busiest corridors carry the most services, layered over decades. GST Road, the main highway south from the city, carries trunk water lines, HT cables and several operators' fibre. Tambaram railway station, a major suburban and long-distance terminal, adds signalling cables, drains and old crossings. The airport and the Air Force Station at Tambaram border parts of the area, where some services can be confirmed only by their owner.

On corridors like these, clients often want each line graded by confidence so that designers know which ones to trust. Grading lines this way is what subsurface utility engineering means, and more about SUE survey lists each grade.

How does a Tambaram Municipal Corporation utility survey run?

Every Tambaram Municipal Corporation utility survey opens with the route and its purpose. A KMZ, sketch or pins and the reason, whether road cut, sewer link, plot or tender, come first, and the boundary is settled next. Radar runs both ways, the locator follows energised cables, and paint or pegs on the street key to a CAD or GIS file with depths, crossings and photos.

The method is explained further in the Mezux utility survey guide for Chennai. For a layout or metropolitan scheme instead of a single street, turn to CMDA utility survey for Chennai sites.

How reliable are the old service records here?

Less reliable than in a long-established city, because ten separate local bodies kept them until 2021. Each former municipality and town panchayat recorded its own water lines, drains and street works, often on paper, to its own standards. Joining them into one corporation did not join their drawings.

Older areas such as Pallavaram and Tambaram have records that no longer match the ground after years of repairs. Former town panchayats may hold only a sketch of the main water line, and builders in newer colonies seldom hand over drawings at all.

A Tambaram record is therefore only a clue to where extra cross-lines are worth running, and the GPR data and the locator decide what goes on the sheet. Send any drawing, however faded, with the brief. With no drawing at all, the quote includes extra band width and chamber checks from the start.

What does it cost?

₹24 per metre for standard radar scanning, ₹32 per metre for an L-section, a ₹1,00,000 project minimum and GST extra. On bigger programmes the entire order is reduced, by 25% once over 100 km, 40% once over 500 km and 50% once over 1,000 km.

Seven kilometres of zone roads at the standard rate total ₹1,68,000, and a 3.5 km sewer-link L-section comes to ₹1,12,000. A single 1.5 km street, at ₹36,000 on rate, falls below the floor and is charged the minimum. Billable set-up or travel has its own line in the quotation. Our engineer in Chennai opens south-side work on order day or by the close of the next business day.

Can house sewer links be levelled in the Tambaram suburbs?

Yes, and in Chitlapakkam or Sembakkam, where lake beds were built over, levels often decide the design. Each house link must fall to a street sewer that may itself be shallow, and soft clay settles, so old levels are seldom trustworthy. Street control comes from DGPS for Tambaram streets. A total station street survey then records plinths, road crowns, manhole inverts and the top of each crossing service. The designer sees which houses can drain by gravity.

Who carries out GPR survey on Tambaram Municipal Corporation streets?

A firm that has used only its own people and kit since 2003. Mezux Touch has covered more than 1.5 lakh km of route with its 58 GPR units, and its systems carry ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001 certification. The corporation at Tambaram has given Mezux work orders directly. Builders, contractors, consultants and utilities on construction projects in the southern suburbs hire us too, and no field work is sub-let. For Tambaram utility mapping, ask for a rate for Chennai and an engineer will reply.

Frequently asked questions

When did Tambaram become a corporation?

Its ordinance was notified on 3 November 2021, joining five municipalities and five town panchayats. Its first councillors took office after the February 2022 polls.

Is Pallavaram part of the Tambaram corporation?

Yes. Pallavaram is one of its five zones, along with Pammal, Sembakkam, Perungalathur and East Tambaram.

Will you go out to villages beyond the corporation?

Yes. The suburbs and surrounding areas are listed under details of survey coverage in Chennai.

Can I get coordinates and levels with the drawing?

Yes. A ground penetrating radar survey can be tied to control from a DGPS job; see what you receive from a DGPS survey.

Can you scan near the airport boundary?

Only with the landholder's consent, and some utility lines near the airfield can be confirmed by their owning agency alone.

How do you deal with rock near the hills?

Charnockite returns sharp reflected signals. Close lines track each echo, because a pipe carries on while a boulder ends, and the utility maps mark only confirmed buried utilities.
