Quick AnswerBefore a trench opens on an Ahmedabad street, an AMC Ahmedabad GPR survey pins down where the underground utilities run. These include Torrent Power cables, Adani Total Gas mains, corporation water and drainage pipes and operator fibre. Ground penetrating radar (GPR), a locator on energised cables and lifted chamber covers combine into one drawing for your tender, design or permission file. Drawing formats: see utility mapping.

What is an AMC Ahmedabad utility survey used for?

It shows an AMC contractor, or its design consultant, the line, rough depth and likely owner of each service in the road. One carriageway may hold AMC water and sewer pipes, Torrent cables, an Adani gas main and fibre from several operators. Each was laid in a different year by agencies that seldom shared records.

The corporation now brands itself the Amdavad Municipal Corporation. Its legal basis is the 1949 Bombay Provincial Municipal Corporations Act, and civic business under it opened in July 1950. Its area has since grown to about 464 square kilometres, run through seven zones holding 48 wards. Older drawings still say "Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation", so expect both names on one file.

Why are the old city and the western suburbs so different underground?

The networks under them were built more than a century apart. The first drainage reached parts of Khadia in 1890, and a piped water scheme followed in 1891. In the pols of the walled city a handcart barely passes and manholes crowd one another. Pipes from the 1890s onward are stacked almost vertically, so scan lines are short and trial pits are hand-dug.

West of the Sabarmati, most roads came later through town planning schemes. They are wider, services spread across footpaths and medians, and fibre duct banks are common. A widening job on a western arterial road can cross the same water main dozens of times, so cart-mounted radar and frequent cross-lines suit it.

Who owns the lines you will cross?

The corporation owns water and drainage; separate utilities own most other lines. Electricity belongs to Torrent Power, piped gas to Adani Total Gas, and ducts to whichever telecom operator laid them. Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation adds diverted services near stations and depots.

How does Ahmedabad's ground affect the radar?

The city sits on deep Sabarmati alluvium, which is mostly kind to radar when it is dry. Sabarmati sand and silt, when dry, let electromagnetic waves through freely, which is why this geophysical method pictures the Ahmedabad subsurface so well. Wet clay pockets after the monsoon, with higher electrical conductivity, spoil the picture. Old walled-city fill does the same, because its brick and rubble scatter small echoes.

After heavy rain we tighten the scan grid and rely more on the cable locator. In the old city we open more chambers to confirm depths by tape. City-wide soil notes sit on GPR survey in Ahmedabad at a glance.

Is your site inside AMC or AUDA limits?

Check this before applying for anything, because the answer changes the paperwork, not the field work. The corporation handles roads inside its 48 wards, while the urban development authority plans the wider ring of villages and growth centres. Many edge jobs near the ring road fall in AUDA territory, covered on our AUDA utility survey by Mezux Touch page.

Smart-city and metro-linked jobs have their own owners and drawing standards. For a whole smart-city corridor, our page on smart city underground mapping sets out how those layers get built.

What do tender and DPR files need?

AMC tender reviewers want a service layer that fits the road design and a crossing list they can check entry by entry. The set comprises AutoCAD and GIS files, a crossing schedule in Excel and chamber photographs. Where every pipe and cable needs a confidence grade, the quality levels of subsurface utility engineering (SUE) apply from day one.

The field crew and the drafting team stay on the same job, so a doubtful crossing on drainage or widening construction projects gets a quick revisit.

How is the work priced?

By the metre of route scanned, with a minimum order per project and a discount on long jobs. Standard radar scanning costs ₹24 per metre, and an L-section showing depths along the line costs ₹32 per metre. Ahmedabad is outside Delhi NCR, so the minimum order is ₹1,00,000 per project. Any mobilisation or travel charge, if one arises, sits as a named item on the quotation.

Whole-order discounts are 25% above 100 km, 40% above 500 km and 50% above 1,000 km. A 6 km standard scan on a western arterial road is ₹1,44,000, while a 3 km stretch is charged at the minimum. GST is extra. An Ahmedabad engineer of ours, based at home, has radar rolling once you say go, and the delay never exceeds a business day.

Why do AMC drainage jobs need levels as well as positions?

Ahmedabad is flat, so a drain's fall is small and every millimetre of level counts. The drop between two AMC manholes can be a few centimetres. Our in-house surveyors level each invert and each detected crossing from an AMC benchmark, giving reduced levels instead of depths below a patched surface. For a surveyed control network, pair the drawing with a DGPS survey for your site. Close work around chambers and kerbs uses a total station level and detail survey.

What should you send us first?

Send a KMZ or pin, the stretch length, the drawing's end use, plus old AMC or utility sheets. A tender layer, a road-cutting file and a dig plan need different detail, so name the one you need.

Our Ahmedabad crews are salaried staff with company-owned radar, as they have been since 2003, and no part is sub-let. The corporation itself has placed work orders with Mezux. Firms holding AMC contracts, their consultants and the line-owning utilities also book scans for buried utilities of their own. For AMC utility mapping, Send us your Ahmedabad site details, and an engineer returns a written scope.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Amdavad Municipal Corporation the same body as the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation?

Yes. It is the same corporation, set up in 1950. Amdavad is the corporation's own branding, while many older documents use Ahmedabad.

Do you need a road-cutting permission to run a radar scan?

Not normally, because a ground penetrating radar survey does not break the surface. Trial pits or any cut do need permission. For the application side, see details of RoW permission in Ahmedabad.

Can you work in the walled city lanes?

Yes. Hand-pushed radar works in narrow pols, with shorter shifts around market hours. Old fill confuses the GPR data, so expect more trial pits.

Can the drawing be issued zone by zone?

Yes. On a long contract the utility maps are split by zone or ward, so designers in one zone do not wait for another.

Do the alignments get painted on the AMC road as well?

Yes. Paint or pegs mark each of the utility lines before we leave, so utility detection on site matches the drawing.

How long does the drawing take after scanning?

A few kilometres usually takes several working days to draw up. Longer corridors are issued in parts.
