DDA GPR Survey: Utility Mapping for Design and Tender Teams
Design-grade utility data for DDA housing, parks, sports and floodplain projects, graded by SUE quality level.
Quick AnswerA DDA GPR survey gives the consultant or contractor a scaled plan of the drains, pipes and cables below a Delhi Development Authority site. Order it before the design is frozen or the tender priced. Ground penetrating radar (GPR), cable tracing and chamber checks feed it. Every line is graded by SUE quality level and delivered in your coordinate system. Layer naming and file types are covered under CAD and GIS utility mapping at a glance.
When does a DDA project need a DDA utility survey?
Mostly at design stage. Consultants and contractors planning housing, parks, roads or floodplain works on DDA land commission a DDA utility survey. It shows which services to keep, divert or protect before drawings are frozen.
The Delhi Development Authority was created under the Delhi Development Act, 1957. It reports to the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, is chaired by the Lieutenant Governor and prepares the Master Plan for Delhi. Its sites range from sub-cities such as Dwarka, Rohini and Narela to biodiversity parks, the Siri Fort sports complex and Yamuna floodplain projects such as Asita and Baansera. A Dwarka pocket is full of services laid in phases; a floodplain site may hold only a trunk sewer or a high-voltage line.
Which SUE quality level suits DDA design work?
Quality level B suits most DDA design packages: each service is found geophysically and drawn to scale. Quality level A test pits are kept for spots where an exact depth drives the design.
In subsurface utility engineering (SUE), a grade shows how the information was gathered, and so what a drawing can be trusted for:
| Quality level | How it is obtained | Typical DDA use |
|---|---|---|
| QL-D | Existing records and verbal information | Feasibility and early layout options |
| QL-C | Records plus visible surface features (chambers, poles, valves) | Concept design, land pooling sector studies |
| QL-B | GPR and electromagnetic tracing, drawn to scale | Detailed design, tender drawings |
| QL-A | Exposed by trial pit, depth measured | Critical crossings, foundations near services |
The quality level is written against all utility lines on our drawing. If a colony road in your package belongs to the municipal corporation, the field team there is the same; see who to call for MCD utility survey. For the method in full, open our page on SUE survey.
How does the Yamuna floodplain affect the survey?
It limits radar depth. Waterlogged silt and shallow groundwater change the electromagnetic properties of the ground and absorb the radar waves. Near the Yamuna we lean on records, chamber checks and tracing, and the drawing states the shorter depth range.
GPR works as a geophysical method, timing the echoes of short radar pulses sent into the subsurface. On the Ridge side, rock and old fill near the surface return strong but cluttered reflected signals. Both cases need an experienced eye on the radargram, not an automatic pick. Each morning a calibration pass over a service of known depth anchors the day's GPR data. How kit is matched to Delhi's soils is described in what we do: GPR survey in Delhi.
Monsoon timing matters too: a floodplain can stay wet for weeks after heavy rain, and a dry-season scan sees deeper on the same ground.
What changes between a built-up pocket and a greenfield site?
In a built-up pocket the job is to find everything. On a greenfield or land pooling site it is to prove what is absent and find the few large services that cross it.
- Built-up housing pockets: dense house connections, park irrigation and street lighting. We scan at close spacing and log every chamber.
- Parks and sports complexes: long cable runs to floodlights and pumps, old pipes and drainage. A wide grid suits them.
- Greenfield and land pooling sectors: open land with a few trunk services, tower footings and village pipelines. We sweep the boundary and planned road lines first.
- Floodplain restoration: drains, trunk sewers and outfalls near the river edge, often deep and partly silted.
Where a DDA project needs a connection across another agency's road, the same drawing supports that road cutting permission. One survey can serve design, tender and permission files, so commission it before the first layout circulates. Bidders use a short tender survey on the riskiest stretches to see how much diversion a package hides.
How is the drawing delivered to the design team?
The design team receives a layered DWG on the project coordinate system, a PDF review set and, when asked, a GIS layer that turns the data collected into utility maps. Layer names follow service type and quality level, so a designer can hide everything below QL-B in one click. We tie the survey to the consultant's control points, or to our own DGPS points listed on the sheet.
Comparing scope and turnaround across councils is easier with NDMC utility survey: scope, time and cost. When a project crosses into Noida or Gurugram, see the GPR survey in Delhi NCR details.
What are the rates for a DDA utility survey?
₹24 per metre of GPR survey at the standard level and ₹32 per metre with an L-section, with a ₹50,000 minimum for Delhi NCR work. GST is charged extra.
- Scanning 12 km of roads in one DDA housing pocket at the standard rate: 12,000 × ₹24 = ₹2,88,000 plus GST.
- A 140 km programme across several sectors: ₹33,60,000 at list rate, less the 25% whole-order discount for orders above 100 km, giving ₹25,20,000 plus GST.
- Programmes past 500 km earn 40% off, and those past 1,000 km earn 50%.
Trial pits for QL-A, traffic arrangements and special GIS schemas are quoted separately. There is no minimum length.
Floodplain levels and the design grid
DDA's Yamuna floodplain parks and housing pockets are designed against levels as much as plan positions. On those sites a total station records grid levels, bund tops and drain inverts, while DGPS brings the coordinates onto the architect's grid. Buried utilities from the radar work drop onto that base, so a designer reads a sewer's depth below finished ground, not below an unknown datum. The tender gains too: cut, fill and utility shifting are priced from one file. More on control points for DDA sites in Delhi and grid levelling by total station.
DDA work orders and work for its consultants
Both routes apply. DDA has given Mezux Touch survey orders of its own, and the architects, engineering consultants and builders on its housing, park and road schemes call us in too. Tender teams ring us before they bid as well. Whoever signs the order, a Mezux crew carries out the ground penetrating radar survey and no DDA site goes to a sub-contractor. To price DDA utility mapping, ask for a rate for Delhi and attach the site plan or tender drawing.
Frequently asked questions
Which quality level should a detailed project report use?
A DPR normally needs QL-B across the site, plus QL-A trial pits at the handful of crossings where exact depth matters to the design.
How deep can you see on the floodplain?
Less than on dry ground. We state the usable depth on the drawing and back it up with tracing and chamber checks.
Can you survey a land pooling sector before roads exist?
Yes. We sweep planned road lines and plot boundaries for trunk pipes and cables and old village pipelines.
Do you assess large water mains crossing a DDA site?
Yes; for crossing design see the Mezux guide: Delhi Jal Board Pipeline Crossings.
Which parts of Delhi do you cover?
Every district of the capital. The central ones are listed in the details of survey coverage in New Delhi.
How soon does a consultant get the drawing?
In most cases within about three working days of the field work. Large construction projects are delivered in agreed batches.
