DJB Pipeline Survey Before HDD: Safe Sewer Crossings
A drill head cannot see a water main. How to find Delhi Jal Board pipes and sewers on your bore line, and prove the clearance before drilling.
Quick AnswerA DJB pipeline survey before HDD finds every Delhi Jal Board water main and sewer on the bore line and measures its depth. A trial pit then confirms the critical crossing. The bore profile is then set to pass under or over each pipe with a clear gap. A drawing showing that gap is the core of any Delhi Jal Board utility survey.
Why does a DJB pipeline survey matter before HDD in Delhi?
Delhi's water mains and sewers are among the largest and oldest pipes under its roads, and a reamer that touches one can flood a road. The Delhi Jal Board supplies water and runs the sewerage network across most of the city, so almost every bore of any length crosses one of its lines.
Unlike an open trench, HDD gives no chance to see a pipe before reaching it. With a blind profile, the first sign of a clash is water at the entry pit or a sudden loss of fluid returns. For every water line crossing, HDD Delhi contractors should hold a measured depth before the rig is set up.
These underground utilities range from old cast iron to steel, concrete and plastic. Large mains run out from treatment plants such as Wazirabad, Chandrawal, Haiderpur and Sonia Vihar, and trunk sewers in the old city can be deep and wide. Mezux Touch's own crews carry out GPR surveys on Delhi Jal Board works, on direct work orders from DJB and for the contractors and consultants laying its mains.
What goes wrong when a bore meets a water main or sewer?
Three things, in rising order of cost: a damaged pipe, a cross bore through a sewer, and a frac-out that lifts the road or floods a basement.
- Direct strike: the pilot bit or reamer hits the main. Old cast iron and cement pipes crack easily, and even ductile iron can be gouged enough to leak.
- Cross bore: the new duct passes through a sewer connection unnoticed, and the fault appears months later when a cleaning machine cuts it.
- Frac-out: pressurised drilling fluid follows a loose old pipe trench and surfaces in the road, a drain or a basement.
A measured depth at each crossing avoids all three, along with the service disruptions that accidental utility strikes bring to whole colonies.
How do you find DJB pipes on the bore line?
By combining the board's records, chamber measurements, GPR and locator scans, and a trial pit at each critical crossing. No single source is enough on its own.
- Records: ask the local DJB division for size, material and alignment. These existing records often hold design depths, so treat them as a start for construction projects, not a final answer.
- Chambers and manholes: with the owner's consent, open valve chambers and manholes and measure crown and invert depths, the most reliable way to fix sewer depths.
- GPR and locator scans: cross the bore line at regular intervals, and trace metallic mains with a transmitter clipped to a valve or hydrant.
- Trial pit: where the bore passes closest to a main, expose the pipe by hand or vacuum excavation and measure it.
A full method for the whole route, including entry and exit pits, is set out in our note on HDD route survey.
What can GPR see, and what can it miss?
Ground penetrating radar is a sensing method in which a moving antenna records echoes from buried objects, and most water mains within its range show clearly. In Delhi's wet, silty or clay ground that range may stop short of the deepest sewers and largest transmission mains. Chamber measurements and trial pits therefore stay in the method.
| Pipe type | How it shows on GPR | Best confirmation |
|---|---|---|
| Cast iron or ductile iron main | Strong, clear hyperbola | EM trace from valve, trial pit |
| Steel transmission main | Strong reflection; may be deep | Records plus trial pit |
| Plastic (HDPE, PVC) water line | Weaker reflection; clearer when full of water | Trial pit, tracer wire if present |
| Asbestos cement or concrete pipe | Moderate reflection | Trial pit |
| Brick or RCC sewer | Visible if shallow; deep trunk sewers often beyond range | Manhole dip of crown and invert |
| House connections | Small, shallow, easy to miss | Chamber check and careful scan spacing |
Other asset owners also need notice before the trial pit and HDD pits are dug; read: Call Before You Dig in India for the national alert process.
Wet Yamuna alluvium shortens radar range, while the drier ridge of south and central Delhi gives more depth but harder drilling. A good report states how deep the radar reached on each stretch.
How should the bore profile be set around a DJB main?
Draw every measured pipe on a longitudinal section of the bore. Then set the profile to pass with the clearance written in the permission, or one agreed in writing with the pipe owner.
The L-section shows the ground line, each existing utility at its measured depth, the planned bore and the gap at each crossing. Two rules of thumb come from our own drilling work:
- Going under a main is safer than going over it, because a bore above a pipe can leave it without support.
- Keep the bore away from old pipe trenches, which give drilling fluid an easy path.
Who needs to know before the rig is set up?
The road owner who issued the permission, the DJB division whose pipes you are crossing, the other utilities on the road and neighbours close to the bore. A short message to each, with the crossing drawing attached, prevents most arguments later.
The road owner may be PWD, MCD, NDMC or another agency, and telecom right of way applications reach it through the Gati Shakti Sanchar portal. Ask the DJB division about any planned valve operation in the drilling window, and keep a record of who was told.
What should the drilling crew watch during the bore?
Depth readings at each crossing, fluid returns and pressure, and any sign of water or fluid surfacing where it should not. The survey helps reduce risks, but the crew still has to drill to the plan.
- Watch the returns at the entry pit, because a sudden drop can mean fluid escaping along a pipe trench.
- Post a person at the nearest manhole downstream when crossing a sewer.
Take closer tracker readings across each marked crossing. After the pull-back, a camera check of a nearby sewer rules out a cross bore.
What should the survey deliver?
A plan of the bore route with every DJB pipe and other service marked, plus an L-section with measured depths. Trial pit records with photos come with it. We supply the drawing in DWG and PDF, a KMZ and radargram snapshots for doubtful crossings, so the driller, road owner and pipe owner read the same utility maps. For the full content of a survey pack, see our note on GPR survey deliverables. If pipes, not cables, are the main concern on your route, our underground pipeline detection service covers mains and sewers on their own.
GPR scanning costs ₹24 per metre, or ₹32 per metre with an L-section, GST extra, with a minimum order of ₹50,000 in Delhi NCR. A Delhi site sees our crew on confirmation day, or one business day later at most. Share your bore list and route, and enquire about a survey.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Delhi Jal Board give permission for road cutting?
The road owner, such as PWD, MCD or NDMC, gives road cutting permission. DJB, as the pipe owner, should be consulted where a bore crosses its mains or sewers.
How deep are DJB water mains?
It varies with size, age and location. Records give design depths, while a trial pit or chamber measurement gives the actual depth at the crossing.
Can GPR find a deep trunk sewer?
Often not, if it lies below the radar's range in wet ground. Manhole measurements of crown and invert depths are the reliable method there.
What is a cross bore?
A new duct drilled straight through a sewer or sewer connection. Locating sewers before drilling and checking them by camera afterwards prevents it.
How does GPR show a water main?
As a hyperbola on the radargram, with its peak at the pipe's position and approximate depth. For more on the method, see our page on GPR scanning.
Do you dig the trial pits?
We can supervise and record them; digging is done under the road owner's permission, by hand or vacuum excavation.
