Thane Municipal Corporation GPR Survey Before Road Cuts
Locator-led cable searches, radar grids and as-laid records on Thane's roads, whether in the lake-dotted old core, along Ghodbunder Road or over in Kalwa and Mumbra.
Quick AnswerBefore a TMC road or society frontage is opened, a Thane Municipal Corporation GPR survey fixes the position of its underground utilities. These include cables, water mains, sewers and any Mahanagar Gas pipe. Ground penetrating radar (GPR), an electromagnetic locator and opened chambers give depths and probable owners on one drawing. The physics of each instrument is covered in our underground utility detection methods guide.
What does a Thane Municipal Corporation utility survey cover?
It maps buried services along a TMC road, junction or frontage, so trenching, drainage, widening or a bore can be planned without a strike. Each drawn service states its path, approximate cover, likely owner and the proof behind it.
The Thane Municipal Corporation was established in 1982. It governs a long, narrow city between Thane Creek and the hills of Sanjay Gandhi National Park, with Kalwa, Mumbra and Diva across the creek. Administration runs through nine ward committees (prabhag samitis), and the city is known for its many lakes. Those features shape the ground, the road pattern and the way we scan.
Why does cable tracing matter so much in Thane?
Many of the strikes that stop a Thane dig involve power and telecom cables, and tracing finds these most reliably. A live cable radiates a field the locator can walk along. A dead cable or plastic duct gives nothing to follow, and radar fills that gap, so on Thane roads the two run together. Technique and limits are set out on more on underground cable detection.
Power comes through the state distribution company or its franchisee and piped gas through Mahanagar Gas, while several operators share the telecom ducts. Wagle Estate adds heavier cables and private process lines near factory gates.
Does Thane's ground vary from one area to the next?
Thane mixes creek-side clay, lakeside fill and hill rock, and each affects radar depth differently.
| Area | Ground you meet | Effect on our scan |
|---|---|---|
| Old core near the station and lakes | Aged fill over a high water table, crowded services | Short radar reach, so transverse passes sit close and many covers are lifted |
| Creek edge and Kalwa side | Clay that is wet and frequently brackish | Signal dies early; the locator does most of the work |
| Ghodbunder Road belt | Recent roads on the hill foot, with rock close to the surface in patches | Radar sees deep, though boulders scatter false echoes |
| Mumbra and Diva | Mixed fill, rapid unplanned building | Hardly any records, so a broader strip is scanned |
Table note: once new lines are laid, an as built survey for Thane sites records the final routes.

How is a busy corridor like Ghodbunder Road scanned?
Lane by lane, with long passes on every carriageway and short transverse passes at fixed intervals and at each junction. Thane crews watch a curved trace build on screen as radar waves, sent by this geophysical technique, return reflected signals from buried objects under the asphalt. A service lying along the road shows on the transverse passes, and one crossing it shows on the long ones. Records here are often stale, because Metro Lines 4 and 4A, in trial runs on this road during 2025–26, forced many utility lines out of the pier zones.
What does the Thane drawing set contain?
A drawing set that your design team, your contractor and the corporation can all read the same way. You get AutoCAD and GIS layers in your coordinates, colour-coded by service, with depths at every crossing. A spreadsheet gives each line's owner and our confidence, chamber photos record measured inverts, and the paint on the road agrees with both.
Layer naming and handover conventions are described on our page on utility mapping.
When should a Thane job be booked, and how many days will it need?
Book it as soon as the alignment is drawn, and before the rains, so the drawing is ready when your road-cutting request goes in. Heavy monsoon rain floods low streets, soaks the ground and cuts radar depth, and road digging across the region is restricted in those months. Check the corporation's current rules for your road before fixing a programme.
Time on site depends on the road more than the length. An old-city junction with stacked cables, two mains and a drain can take longer than a kilometre of open road. The quote states the expected crew-days, and long routes are released stretch by stretch.
If the line moves after scanning, only the changed length is scanned again.
How is the work priced for Thane?
Thane work is priced by the metre, with a minimum order of ₹1,00,000 per project and discounts that grow with total length.
- Standard radar scan: ₹24 per metre
- Scan with L-section depth profile: ₹32 per metre
- Minimum per project: ₹1,00,000
- Whole-order discounts: 25% above 100 km, 40% above 500 km, 50% above 1,000 km
- GST is extra
Two Thane cases show the arithmetic. Two kilometres of L-section on a prabhag road totals ₹64,000; being under the floor, it is invoiced at ₹1,00,000. Along Ghodbunder Road, 7.5 km of L-section comes to ₹2,40,000. With an engineer living in Thane, TMC road work starts once you approve, never later than one business day on. If kit has to travel at a cost, that figure is itemised separately on the quote.
How are sewer links on low Thane roads levelled?
Against a benchmark, before the trench is designed, so the new pipe can fall to the main. Many TMC roads near the creek and the lakes are almost flat, leaving a society sewer link only a few hundred millimetres of fall. Our surveyors level the outlet, the corporation manhole and every crossing between them on one long section. A total station long section suits the short frontages; longer stretches are controlled with DGPS for Thane routes.
Who does GPR survey work on Thane Municipal Corporation projects?
A utility survey firm that sends its own engineers and its own equipment to every job. The company started in 2003 and keeps 58 GPR systems on its own books. Its log passes 1.5 lakh km, auditors check it against ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001, and shifts never leave our own payroll. The Thane Municipal Corporation has given us direct work orders. We also scan for the contractors, consultants and utilities on TMC roads, whose files then carry our drawing.
For TMC utility mapping, give the Mezux team the road name, its length and the first digging date, then request a site visit for Thane.
Frequently asked questions
Is Kalwa, Mumbra or Diva, on the far bank of the creek, covered too?
Yes. They fall inside TMC limits, and the same terms apply there.
Can you give exact coordinates for each line?
Yes. We fix them with satellite positioning; see DGPS survey for Thane sites for accuracy.
What if the cable we need to find is not energised?
The locator then needs help. We inject a signal at any reachable end, and the GPR data often shows the duct as well.
Can you scan near the lakes?
Yes, though wet ground near the water shortens radar depth. A ground penetrating radar survey there adds chamber checks and locator runs.
Do you scan inside housing societies?
Yes. With the managing committee's approval we cover internal roads and the gate frontage where services enter, and leave utility maps the society can keep.
Can you survey at night on Ghodbunder Road?
Yes, if your traffic permission allows it. Night shifts are priced on request.
