Quick AnswerA Bhopal Municipal Corporation GPR survey locates the Kolar and Narmada mains, sewers, Madhya Kshetra cables and fibre ducts beneath a city road before anyone trenches or bores. Our team walks ground penetrating radar (GPR) in a criss-cross pattern and keeps a locator on each energised cable. You receive a plan marked with depths, prepared to suit your work order or cutting file. New to the methods? See underground utility detection methods explained.

When do you need a Bhopal Municipal Corporation utility survey?

Any time a cut, bore or footing is planned in a BMC road and nobody on the job can vouch for what is buried there. In Bhopal that covers most jobs. Typical cases are new supply or sewer pipes under a BMC order, road widening beside a crowded verge and fibre bored beneath a main road. DPRs and flyover footings follow the same rule. Each needs a ground penetrating radar survey first.

Bhopal became a municipal corporation in 1983, building on a board formed in 1952, and today covers 85 wards across about 463 square kilometres. New colonies with tidy layouts sit beside old-city lanes where nobody holds a full record of the underground utilities.

What makes Bhopal's ground different for radar?

The city's hills, lakes and mix of soils change radar behaviour from one road to the next. With each pass, electromagnetic waves enter the road, and pipes or soil boundaries send back reflected signals, which appear to the operator as arcs. Much of Bhopal lies on black cotton clay, which holds moisture and drains the pulse. Sandstone and basalt ridges give deeper readings but more clutter from stones, and near the Upper Lake seepage can hide deeper plastic pipes.

The antenna and pass spacing are reset between clay, ridge and lakeside stretches. Wherever the image fades, the locator takes over more of the utility detection; you can read about underground cable detection to see how that works on live and dead cables. For notes on ridge rock, lakeside seepage and black clay, see GPR survey in Bhopal details.

How do we scan a Bhopal junction?

In a grid: lines along each arm, cross-lines across it, and a separate trace for every live cable. Pipes at a junction turn, branch and cross at angles, so a single pass down the middle misses half of them.

Illustration: long lines follow each arm of the junction, cross-lines cut across it, and the locator follows live cables separately.

Cross-lines are spaced wider on straight stretches and tighter near chambers, valves and transformers. Lifted manhole and valve covers, where permitted, give measured depths to check the radar.

Who owns the lines under a Bhopal road?

BMC holds water, sewer and drains, Madhya Kshetra holds the cables, and gas and telecom each have their own operators. Knowing whose files to request speeds the job.

Table note: when the designer also needs kerbs, levels and road edges on the same sheet, add a topographic survey by Mezux Touch to the visit.

Does work near the metro or the lakes need extra care?

Yes, because both areas have seen services moved or added recently. Bhopal Metro's Orange Line carried its first passengers in December 2025, and services beside it were shifted during building. The city draws water from the Upper Lake, Kolar dam and the Narmada, through large pressurised mains that are costly to damage.

Beside a big Kolar or Narmada main our strip widens and both sides of the pipe are marked. Near the Orange Line, and in T.T. Nagar where Smart City works relaid services, older sheets are only a loose hint.

How much does the survey cost in Bhopal?

₹24 per metre for a standard scan or ₹32 per metre for an L-section, subject to a ₹1,00,000 minimum for each Bhopal project.

  • Long routes get a discount on the whole order: 25% above 100 km, 40% above 500 km, 50% above 1,000 km
  • GST is added to every figure
  • A Bhopal mobilisation charge, should the job attract one, appears as a separate line in your quotation

A 40 km pipeline corridor at the standard rate totals ₹9,60,000 plus GST. A 150 km fibre job enters the first slab, cutting 25% off every metre. Our Bhopal surveyor works from a home base in the city, so fieldwork can open the moment you agree the scope, with the next working day as the furthest point.

What arrives in your inbox after the scan?

One set of files for the person who digs and another for the person who approves. The gang on the construction site gets an annotated plan, a crossing list with rough depths and spray marks on the tarmac. For the designer or BMC engineer there are CAD and PDF sheets on the agreed grid, chamber photos and the utility data in an Excel register.

Each line carries a confidence note. A cable traced end to end is shown differently from a radar target seen in real time but not followed, and suspected lines come with a trial pit advised. A drawing that claims more than the ground showed is how pipes get hit.

Should the survey come before a BMC cutting application?

Yes; scan first, so the file lists every line your cut or bore will meet. BMC fixes and revises its own forms, charges and reinstatement terms, which is why this page leaves them out. Our part is the proof: a depth-marked plan, a list of crossings and photos your engineer can pin to the file.

What changes for drains near the lakes and ridges?

Bhopal's roads climb over sandstone and basalt ridges and drop towards the Upper Lake, so drains fall steeply in some streets and barely at all near the shore. On BMC drain jobs we take control from DGPS survey around Bhopal and run a total station up the ridge roads for levels, culverts, outfalls and the lake edge. Radar lines then appear as levels, so fall and clearance show in one view.

BMC Bhopal projects: whose crews, and for whom?

Staff engineers and company radars on every Bhopal job. Since 2003 the firm has done nothing except underground survey. The radars number 58 and the drilling rigs 18, none of them hired, while certification spans ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001. No outside crew does its fieldwork. Some jobs arrive as direct BMC work orders, while civil firms, consultants and agencies working on its roads bring others. Every buried utility is identified and mapped by our own team.

Frequently asked questions

Can you scan the lanes around Chowk as readily as Arera Colony?

Yes. Old-city lanes are slower, with shorter passes and more manholes lifted, yet the approach to mapping underground lines stays the same.

Which parts of Bhopal can your crews reach?

Every ward, plus pockets beyond BMC limits; our page on survey coverage in Bhopal has the detail.

Does the radar image alone separate a pipe from a cable?

Not reliably. Identification comes from pairing the image with locator results, manhole checks and the way the line runs.

Do you bill extra for spray marks?

No. Marking every located line on the tarmac comes within the survey.

Is scanning possible while the rains are on?

Yes, although soaked black clay cuts reach, so deep mains are better scanned once the rains end.

Will you share raw radar data?

Yes, if asked, alongside the finished sheet.
