Quick AnswerBefore an Agra corporation road is dug, an Agra Nagar Nigam GPR survey charts each sewer, main, Torrent Power cable, Green Gas pipe and duct. Close to ASI monuments and along the metro, timing and permissions shape the job as much as the ground penetrating radar (GPR) does. Torrent's franchise cables carry the biggest risk; our approach is in what we do: underground cable detection.

Why does an Agra Nagar Nigam utility survey need extra care?

Because the work often sits close to protected monuments, inside a zone with its own environmental rules, and under roads where a private franchisee runs the power. The fieldwork of a ground penetrating radar survey is familiar. Pulses of radio waves enter the road, reflected signals mark pipes and ducts on screen in real time, and a locator confirms live cables. In Agra the difference lies in the planning around that fieldwork.

Agra's 100 wards fall to a corporation that operates under the Uttar Pradesh Municipal Corporation Act, 1959. The city has three World Heritage Sites: the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and, outside the city, Fatehpur Sikri. Many more monuments are protected by the Archaeological Survey of India. Agra also sits inside the Taj Trapezium Zone, set up by the Supreme Court to curb pollution around the Taj. All of this bears on when and how anyone digs.

What happens near a protected monument?

Under the national monuments law, the 100 metres around a centrally protected monument form a prohibited area for new construction. The next 200 metres form a regulated area, where building or digging needs permission from the competent authority. A radar survey does not break ground, but the work it prepares for does, and the permission file moves faster when it already shows what lies under the route.

Illustration: around a centrally protected monument, the prohibited and regulated areas shape where a new service can run; the utility survey shows what the chosen route will meet.

We plan these jobs with the client so that scanning happens in permitted hours, equipment stays on the carriageway and nothing is fixed to or marked on historic fabric. Paint marks near monuments are replaced by pegs or chalk where asked.

Who runs the power and gas lines in Agra?

Electricity reaches Agra homes through Torrent Power, the city franchisee, while Green Gas Ltd supplies piped gas. Torrent has handled distribution since 2010 and rebuilt much of the cable network. The corporation owns chiefly the sewers and drains, plus most supply mains through its water wing, fed by the Yamuna and by Ganga water from the Gangajal project.

Table note: positions vary street by street; our drawings show what we find, as described on learn about utility mapping.

What has the metro changed?

Services have been diverted around stations on the first line, and more will move as the rest is built. The Agra Metro's priority stretch from Mankameshwar to Taj East Gate opened in March 2024. The full first line to Sikandra has underground stations through the old city, and a second line, from Agra Cantt to Kalindi Vihar, is under construction. Near those corridors, expect pipes and cables moved since the last corporation drawing.

How do you find cables on a crowded footpath?

One live cable at a time with the locator first; then radar passes across the footpath catch whatever carries no current. Footpaths around the markets near Agra Fort and on the main city roads carry power, lighting and telecom in a tight band. We mark every cable and crossing on the surface, and the drawing separates them by owner. The full approach is under what we do: underground cable detection.

How does Agra's ground behave for radar?

The city lies on Yamuna alluvium, which is workable, but salty moisture can cut the radar's reach sharply. Groundwater in parts of the Agra region is brackish. Dissolved salts raise the electrical conductivity of damp soil, and such ground absorbs a radar pulse much faster than plain damp sand. Along the Yamuna, in the lower wards and beside seeping sewers, the loss can be severe.

An opening test pass on every site measures how deep the signal reaches, and that figure is printed on the sheet. Where it is short, the locator takes over utility detection for metallic pipes and cables. Chamber covers give measured sewer depths, and doubtful plastic pipes are flagged for a trial hole.

What will you receive?

A drawing that a designer, a permission reviewer and a digging gang can each use. The utility maps come as AutoCAD and GIS layers, with a PDF for the permission file and a crossing list; formats are at about CAD and GIS utility mapping. Monument-zone files often need real coordinates, supplied by tying the sheet to a DGPS survey for Agra sites. For our Agra crew and soil notes, open our page on GPR survey in Agra.

What does an Agra survey cost?

Charged by the scanned metre, subject to a project floor, and cheaper per metre on big orders.

  • Standard GPR scan: ₹24 per metre
  • L-section with depth profile: ₹32 per metre
  • Minimum order: ₹1,00,000 per project
  • Whole-order discount: 25% above 100 km, 40% above 500 km, 50% above 1,000 km

Scanning 4.2 km of sewer on the standard rate totals ₹1,00,800, narrowly clearing the minimum. By contrast, 800 m of L-section beside a monument comes to ₹25,600 and is raised to ₹1,00,000, so it is better ordered with other Agra streets. GST is extra. One of our surveyors lives in Agra, so radar is on site on order day, within one business day at most. Chargeable travel is shown on its own in the quotation.

How do we show distance from a protected monument?

Permission near a centrally protected monument turns on distance. On Agra jobs we fix the monument boundary and the trench line on one grid with DGPS points around Agra sites. A total station along the trench route then picks up walls, gates and road edges. The drawing shows the measured gap from the protected limit at each chainage, beside the buried utilities from the radar, which settles whether a pit falls inside a zone.

Who scans Agra Nagar Nigam roads?

Mezux Touch: utility surveys since 2003, 58 GPR systems of our own and no sub-let field crews. ISO 45001, 14001 and 9001 certificates cover the work. Agra Nagar Nigam has issued us work orders directly. Torrent cable contractors, metro-side consultants and other firms on its roads also book us for permission and design files. Frequently asked questions

Does a GPR survey need monument permission?

The scan does not break ground, but the work it prepares often needs permission inside the prohibited or regulated areas. Check with the competent authority before planning any dig there.

Can you survey early in the morning near the Taj?

Where access rules allow it, yes. We plan hours with the client and local authorities so the crew leaves the construction site before visitor traffic peaks.

Will you mark the road near a monument with paint?

Only where allowed. Otherwise we use pegs, chalk or a marked-up drawing and photographs.

Who holds power cable records in Agra?

The city distribution franchisee, Torrent Power. Request their utility data in good time, as it shows us where to tighten the scan.
