Quick AnswerOld corporation pipes, new Jal Board mains and fibre often share one street, so a Guwahati Municipal Corporation GPR survey sorts out what is where before excavation. Each line is painted on the road and put on a plan. Hill stretches and soggy low ground need different ground penetrating radar (GPR) settings, backed by locator sweeps and test pits. City-wide layers are covered under more on smart city underground mapping.

What should a Guwahati Municipal Corporation utility survey tell you?

It answers four questions about the road you mean to open: what is buried there, along which line, at about what depth, and belonging to whom. A ground penetrating radar survey finds the underground utilities there: mains, service pipes, drains, power cables, fibre and any line nobody can account for. Answers go down as paint on the carriageway and a depth-marked plan.

The corporation works under the Guwahati Municipal Corporation Act, 1969, and the elected body first met in 1974. The city now has 60 wards. One route can start on a hillside, pass the Brahmaputra bank and end in a hollow that floods after a downpour.

Why does Guwahati's ground change so much from street to street?

The city mixes hills, foot slopes and wet floodplain within a few kilometres, and each treats a radar signal differently. GPR sends radio waves into the ground and reads their echoes. Drier hill soils let the signal reach a useful depth. By the river, along the Bharalu and around Deepor Beel, groundwater sits close below the road, and wet ground with high electrical conductivity kills the pulse far sooner.

Dashed blue: water table close to the surface Wetland edge Deeper reach (dry hill soil) Moderate Shallow Dark bars: typical radar reach. Lower ground means wetter soil and a shorter reach. Hill slope Floodplain towards the river
Illustration: radar reach shrinks as the ground drops from Guwahati's hills to the wet floodplain, so the survey method changes along a single route.

We split a route into stretches before the visit. Higher stretches get a standard scan. On wet lengths we fit a lower-frequency antenna and tighten the line spacing. Each metal service is swept with the locator, and any key crossing the radar cannot resolve gets a test pit. Read the GPR survey in Guwahati details for ground notes and crew information.

How is the change in water supply affecting what lies under the roads?

New water networks are going in and responsibility is moving between bodies, so old maps are even less reliable. The Guwahati Metropolitan Drinking Water and Sewerage Board, the Guwahati Jal Board, was set up under a 2009 state Act and runs the JICA-assisted water supply project. In March 2025 the corporation said it would stop its own supply in areas covered by that scheme from 1 July 2025.

Many streets now hold buried utilities of three ages: an older corporation pipe, a newer project main and fresh connections. Some old lines are idle but still buried. Separating them and utility detection of plastic pipe in wet ground is slow work; see more about underground pipeline detection. Deep trenching is also coming, as the state announced the city's first sewerage network in March 2025.

What does each ground setting need from the survey?

The method follows the ground; the table gives the usual plan for each setting.

Guwahati groundHow far radar seesExtra checks
Dry hillside roadUseful depthMore passes at hairpins and beside retaining walls
Foothill street on made-up fillModerate, rubble adds noiseEvery metal line traced by locator
Low road near the riverLimited, often only the top layerTest pits at the crossings that matter

Arterial road such as GS RoadChanges as the ground doesDivided into lengths, each with its own settings

Table note: where drainage design needs levels too, topographic survey by Mezux Touch can run in the same visit.

How do the rains and permissions affect timing?

Book a dry spell if you can, and finish the survey before you apply for a road cut. Guwahati's heavy monsoon and waterlogging weaken radar and can leave low roads under water for days. Urgent monsoon utility surveys are possible, and the quote then allows for extra test pits.

A road may sit with the corporation, a state department or another agency, each with its own cutting procedure and fees, so check with that owner before setting dates. Our sheet, showing your trench, the located services and the separation at every crossing, helps the application along. For a worked example near the capital complex, read utility survey guide for Dispur Guwahati.

What happens on the day the crew arrives?

The field day follows a fixed order, so nothing is missed when the ground keeps changing. Our engineer first walks the route with your representative, logging manholes, poles, valve boxes and recent digging. The route is split by ground type with an antenna and line spacing for each stretch. Radar passes run both ways, with traces on screen in real time, while the locator follows pipes and cables carrying a signal. Agreed chambers and pits on the construction site are opened, and numbered paint marks match the plan. A daily note tells the site team which stretches are complete.

What does a Guwahati survey cost?

Charges run per scanned metre above a project floor. A surveyor of ours is based in the city, and scanning starts once you confirm, inside one business day at most.

  • Standard GPR scan: ₹24 per metre
  • L-section with depths: ₹32 per metre
  • Minimum order: ₹1,00,000 per project
  • Discount on the whole order: 25% above 100 km, 40% above 500 km, 50% above 1,000 km
  • GST extra

Eight kilometres of standard scan for a pipeline package comes to ₹1,92,000. Long sections over 3.5 km of a drain upgrade total ₹1,12,000. Jobs under ₹1,00,000 are invoiced at that floor. Chargeable travel or set-up, if any, is listed as mobilisation in our quotation.

How do we map where GMC supply ends and Jal Board begins?

From July 2025 the corporation was to stop supplying water in Jal Board scheme areas, so many streets carry an old GMC line beside a new board main. Control comes from Guwahati DGPS control, and a total station at valve chambers and service points fixes valves, meters and road edges. The data collected by radar and locator is drawn on that base and labelled by owner where the evidence allows, so designers see whose main is whose.

Who books GPR survey for GMC projects, and whose crews do it?

Clients include GMC itself as well as contractors, consultants, utilities and plot owners, and Mezux employees handle every task. Our team has worked buried services since 2003 with 58 radars the firm owns outright; fieldwork never leaves the company, and ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001 audits apply. Work comes on GMC's own orders and through the firms on its water, drain, road and fibre construction projects.

For GMC utility mapping, once the alignment is final, send us your Guwahati site details: a KMZ or pin, approximate length and the drawing's purpose.

Frequently asked questions

Which parts of Guwahati can you cover?

Every ward of the corporation and the fringe beyond it; see survey coverage in Guwahati for details.

Can you tell an idle old pipe from a live new one?

Often. Alignment, depth, material and links to valves or meters separate them, and a trial pit settles any doubt.

Is radar any use on waterlogged roads?

It sees only a short way down, so the locator, opened manholes and test pits carry more of the load, and the plan flags those lengths.

Can you survey on hill roads with retaining walls?

Yes. We scan the carriageway and verge and note services running into or along the walls.

Do you scan plots before building?

Yes. A plot scan shows any line crossing the site and services at the frontage.

When will the Guwahati plan reach us?

A route of a few kilometres is drawn within days of the site visit, and longer ones arrive in instalments.
