Quick AnswerAn NMMC Navi Mumbai GPR survey sets out the buried utilities under a ward road or factory frontage, from Belapur to Digha. Every Morbe-fed main, cable and duct on the sheet carries a confidence grade. That graded sheet, built from ground penetrating radar (GPR), a cable locator and lifted covers, goes to your road-cutting file or design team. File types and layer set-up are covered in more about CAD and GIS utility mapping.

Who looks after roads and services inside NMMC limits?

In the northern nodes, civic roads, water and sewers fall to the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation; electricity, gas and telecom each answer to a separate utility. NMMC was constituted on 17 December 1991 and began work on 1 January 1992, taking over nodes that CIDCO had planned and built. It is divided into eight administrative wards: Belapur, Nerul, Vashi, Turbhe, Koparkhairane, Ghansoli, Airoli and Digha.

Unusually for an Indian city, the corporation owns its main water source. Morbe Dam, on the Dhavari River near Khalapur in Raigad district, passed to NMMC after the state approved the takeover in 2002. Its water reaches the ward networks through large trunk mains, so big-diameter pipes sit under several arterial roads. An NMMC Navi Mumbai utility survey treats each crossing of those mains with care.

At what point should the scan come in an NMMC road-cutting file?

Before you apply, so the trench line on the file has already been tested against what lies under it. NMMC sets its own procedure, forms and charges and revises them from time to time, so this page does not quote them. A clean drawing from a ground penetrating radar survey shortens the engineer's review and makes the dig safer.

How sure can we be about each line?

It varies with how each line was found, and the sheet states this per line on the subsurface utility engineering (SUE) scale of quality levels. The grading lets a designer decide where to trust the drawing and where to dig a trial pit first. Grading rules are explained under SUE survey at a glance.

GradeBasis for the lineWhere NMMC clients use it
QL-DPaper records or someone's recollectionFirst sketch of a ward road scheme
QL-CRecords tied to chambers and valves seen on the surfaceConcept layouts and cost estimates
QL-BPicked up by radar or locator and marked on the roadRoad-cutting submissions and dig plans
QL-AUncovered in a trial pit and measuredWhere a trench crosses a trunk main or HT cable

Table note: graded lines are delivered as layers you can switch on and off; read about utility mapping for the file structure.

What is different about the industrial belt?

Along the Thane–Belapur road, a factory frontage hides far more than a housing street: heavy power feeds, process pipes, fire-water rings and private lines. The MIDC industrial area there runs through several northern wards. Inside the gate many utility lines belong to the company and appear on no public record. We therefore request the occupier's layout drawing and take the radar right to the compound wall.

The ground is mixed, which shapes how far the radar sees. Mixed creek and hill ground is where this geophysical method shows its range, its electromagnetic waves picturing the subsurface from each echo. Closer to Thane Creek, salt water raises electrical conductivity until the pulse fades a short way down. Nearer the Parsik hills the ground is rockier, and a high frequency antenna resolves shallow ducts well. The locator carries on wherever the radar image weakens. Navi Mumbai's ground and access are described on GPR survey in Navi Mumbai details.

What else can be captured on the same visit?

Levels, kerbs, poles, trees and chamber covers, so the utility layer sits on a full base map. Order the topographic pass with the scan and both share one base; what you receive from a topographic survey gives the feature list and accuracy. Chamber photos and a spreadsheet of every line with its probable owner and grade come with the set.

What should you have ready before we visit?

A route or plot pin, the ward, the length, the reason for the survey and any existing drawings. Access hours, gate passes for industrial premises and your coordinate system help too. Missing items do not stop the job; they only widen the scan.

Older node roads in Vashi and Nerul hide services laid over three decades by different agencies, some abandoned and some live. The GPR data separates abandoned lines where it can, because a dead pipe in the wrong place still blocks a trench. Where two lines run too close to separate, the drawing marks the band for hand digging.

How is an NMMC job priced?

NMMC jobs are charged per metre, with a minimum order of ₹1,00,000 for each project and lower rates on long programmes.

  • ₹24 per metre: radar scan, plan view
  • ₹32 per metre: scan with an L-section showing depths
  • Smallest invoice for one project: ₹1,00,000
  • Order-wide discount of 25% beyond 100 km, 40% beyond 500 km, 50% beyond 1,000 km
  • GST is not included

A 4 km standard scan in one ward comes to ₹96,000, below the floor, so it is billed at ₹1,00,000. Scanning 10 km across two wards is ₹2,40,000. Our surveyor lives in Navi Mumbai, so scanning starts within one business day of your confirmation at the latest. An NMMC quote shows mobilisation or travel on its own line where it applies.

Do you add coordinates and levels for NMMC water main work?

We do, because a trunk main designer needs heights as much as positions. Mains fed from Morbe cross the city, and their hydraulic design rests on ground levels along the route. Our surveyors start from NMMC or MIDC benchmarks and record the crown of every crossing service as a reduced level. The sheet then shows how much cover a new main will have over a fibre duct. On open stretches of Thane–Belapur Road, satellite DGPS control is quick to set up. Within factory gates and narrow ward lanes, a total station level run takes over.

Who carries out GPR survey on NMMC roads?

Only our own staff. The radars on an NMMC road are among the 58 GPR systems Mezux Touch owns. Utility surveys have been its business since 2003; ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001 certificates are held, and all field shifts stay in-house. NMMC has issued work orders to us in its own name. Road-cutting applicants, contractors, consultants and utilities working on ward construction projects call us in too. For NMMC utility mapping, the ward name, the length and the purpose are enough to draft a scope, so send us your Navi Mumbai site details.

Frequently asked questions

Which body handles roads in Kharghar or Ulwe?

Not NMMC. CIDCO or the Panvel corporation looks after them; for those nodes, see CIDCO utility survey for Navi Mumbai sites.

Will you scan within a working MIDC factory compound?

With the occupier's consent, yes, including yards, internal roads and the road frontage. Lines are marked on the ground in real time as the scan proceeds.

Do you need trial pits for every crossing?

No. We suggest them only where utility locating leaves a line in doubt or the crossing is critical, such as a trunk main.

Will radar pick up an old AC (asbestos-cement) main in Vashi or Nerul?

Often. Non-metallic pipe shows on radar if the ground is reasonably dry. Near the creek, chamber readings and trial pits take over.

When do we get the NMMC drawing?

For a few kilometres, usually days after scanning. Longer jobs are issued in sections.
