Quick AnswerA Delhi Cantonment Board GPR survey maps the pipes, cables and ducts under cantonment roads and defence land before trenching or boring. Ground penetrating radar (GPR) and cable locators do the field work. Your client arranges passes and permissions; we supply crew and vehicle details in advance and keep to fixed hours. Many jobs here are road crossings; read about HDD route survey for bore-path checks.

Who controls the ground in a Delhi Cantonment Board utility survey?

The Cantonment Board is the local municipal body, but most of the land is defence land managed through Defence Estates, and the military controls daily access to many roads. A Delhi Cantonment Board utility survey needs both sides to agree before a crew enters.

Delhi Cantonment dates from 1914, on land acquired from Naraina village, and covers roughly 10,452 acres, about 42 square kilometres. It is a Class I cantonment under the Cantonments Act, 2006, with Ministry of Defence policy and Defence Estates oversight. The officer commanding the station heads the board, with elected members alongside.

It is one of only three local bodies in the capital, next to MCD and NDMC. Lying about five kilometres from the international airport, it sits on many routes towards Palam and Dhaula Kuan.

What clearances and passes do survey crews need?

Expect written permission from the road or land owner and entry passes for every crew member and vehicle. Your client or the executing agency obtains these; we supply the details they ask for.

Before a cantonment job we prepare a single file for the client's liaison officer:

  • Names, ID copies and mobile numbers of each surveyor
  • Vehicle numbers and the equipment carried in
  • A route map of the scan in chainage
  • Proposed dates and hours, with a back-up date
  • Company documents and ISO certificates

Passes can take longer than the survey, so start the paperwork once the route is fixed. Photography is normally restricted: we photograph only where the permission allows and otherwise leave the camera in the vehicle.

Which works need a utility survey inside the cantonment?

Mostly linear works that cross the area: pipes and cables, optical fibre, gas pipelines and improvements to the main through-roads.

Civil areas such as Sadar Bazar behave like older Delhi colonies. Military areas have wide roads, long boundary walls and fewer, larger buried utilities, often laid decades ago with records held by the station. The board may prefer trenchless crossings to keep traffic moving. If you plan to bore instead of trench, read about HDD route survey for how we check a bore path before the rig arrives.

Where several services share one long strip, a corridor approach beats scanning each crossing on its own. Read our page on utility corridor mapping for how we record a full strip with offsets and depths.

How do we run the field work?

Two or three surveyors, one vehicle, fixed hours and a scan plan agreed with the escort before the first pass.

Day one starts at the gate with pass checks. We walk the route with the escort and open the chambers we are allowed to open. Electromagnetic tracing then follows every metallic pipe and cable we can connect to, and GPR runs crossing passes over the alignment. A ground penetrating radar survey is a geophysical check: electromagnetic waves enter the soil and the reflected signals appear in real time. Older alluvium with patches of fill lets the radar reach the depths that matter here. For soils and equipment elsewhere in the capital, see GPR survey in Delhi, and for jobs that continue into Gurugram, what we do: GPR survey in Delhi NCR.

Timelines run longer than in a civil area. Compare how long an NDMC utility survey takes; cantonment jobs add a day or two for gate procedures.

What will the survey cost?

Defence land does not change the rates. A standard GPR survey costs ₹24 per metre and one with an L-section ₹32 per metre. The minimum order in Delhi NCR is ₹50,000, and GST is extra.

  • A 6 km HDD alignment with an L-section: 6,000 × ₹32 = ₹1,92,000 plus GST.
  • A 700 m water line crossing at the standard rate: ₹16,800, so the ₹50,000 minimum applies.
  • Whole-order discounts: 25% above 100 km, 40% above 500 km, 50% above 1,000 km.

Pass or permission fees are paid by the permission holder and sit outside our rate. No order has a minimum length.

What should you send before we price it?

The route, the purpose, the permission holder and the expected dates. With those four we can usually return a written scope and price without a site visit.

  • A KMZ or marked map with start, end and every planned crossing
  • Plan positions only, or an L-section for a bore or trench design
  • The permission holder and the contact for passes
  • Any records of existing services, even old or partial ones

Send old records even when you doubt them. A faded sheet still tells us where to start tracing, and the final drawing shows which utility lines matched the record and which did not.

Boundary pillars, crossings and chainage

Cantonment routes often run beside boundary walls and defence pillars, and the drawing must show which side of that line each service sits on. We observe the nearest pillars and junctions with DGPS. A total station then records walls, gates, culverts and the radar marks between them. For a bore under a cantonment road, entry and exit pits get coordinates and levels, and the chainage starts from a fixed point the permission letter can quote. Where drones are not allowed, this ground-based method still gives a complete plan. Background: Delhi DGPS survey, and total station pick-up of walls and pits.

Who does the GPR work on cantonment land?

A Mezux Touch crew on the payroll, carrying company-owned radars, does every metre. No subcontractor steps in. Some jobs come as work orders the Delhi Cantonment Board has issued to us itself. Others are surveys for the contractors, utilities and consultants who hold permission for a project. Pass details for each crew member are ready before the first visit, and every buried line is identified and mapped by our own staff. Frequently asked questions

Do your surveyors carry identity documents for passes?

Yes. Each crew member carries government photo ID, and copies go in advance with the pass application.

Can you survey near the airport side?

Routes towards Palam can be surveyed wherever the permission covers them. The escort decides which stretches are open on the day.

Who keeps the drawings of defence areas?

Only the client who commissioned the work keeps the GPR data and drawings. Extra handling rules can be agreed in writing before we start.

Can you check a pipeline crossing under a cantonment road?

Yes, with an L-section along the bore. The method for underground utilities at crossings is set out here: read Delhi Jal Board Pipeline Crossings.

Do you also work in the rest of Delhi?

Yes, every district; see survey coverage in New Delhi at a glance.

What if the pass is not ready on the day?

We move the visit to the next date the gate accepts. Early notice keeps the crew free for other work.
