Quick AnswerFrom New Kanpur City parcels to GT Road bore crossings, a KDA Kanpur GPR survey locates what is buried on authority land. Each line gets a confidence grade, separating the proven from the merely drawn. Most KDA work suits a ground penetrating radar (GPR) survey run to SUE quality levels; see details on SUE survey for how the grades work.

What does a KDA Kanpur utility survey give a design team?

It gives the designers of a Kanpur Development Authority road, scheme or building a graded map of the buried services on site. They can see which lines are confirmed, which are probable and which exist only in old records. That grading turns a ground penetrating radar survey into a drawing an engineer can design against.

KDA owes its existence to the Uttar Pradesh Urban Planning and Development Act of 1973. It drafts master plans for Kanpur and nearby towns, lays out housing schemes and builds roads and civic buildings. Its construction projects are larger and earlier in design than corporation jobs. We therefore propose a survey run to subsurface utility engineering (SUE) levels in place of a quick pre-dig scan.

What are SUE quality levels, in plain terms?

Four grades of confidence, from "it is on an old drawing" up to "we have seen it in a trial hole and measured it". Each line on our drawing carries one of them, so the designer can decide where an extra check is worth paying for. Grades and their rules are explained at details on SUE survey.

Illustration: the bulk of a KDA corridor reaches QL-B; QL-A pits are kept for the handful of crossings where a depth error would hurt.

On a typical KDA road we take most of the route to QL-B with radar and the locator. QL-A trial holes are then advised at a few critical points, such as a gas main under a junction or a feeder at a bridge approach. A trunk sewer at the low point of a new drain is another.

Where does HDD come into KDA work?

Wherever a new service has to cross a busy road, rail line or drain without an open cut. Arterial routes such as GT Road cannot be closed for a trench, so many crossings in KDA schemes are bored. The reamer travels blind, so the bore line and both pits must be mapped first. Our bore-path routine is on learn about HDD route survey; owning 18 HDD rigs ourselves, we draw what a driller looks for.

What does a new township such as New Kanpur City need first?

A combined topographic and utility base before any layout is fixed. KDA's long-planned New Kanpur City scheme has a blueprint of about 153 hectares across Singhpur Kachar and neighbouring villages. On such land, farm pipelines, tube-well cables and overhead-to-underground transitions appear without warning. We sweep the parcel, record levels and features, and deliver both on one base. The topographic side is described on topographic survey for Kanpur sites.

How long does a survey take?

A few kilometres means a few days on site and a drawing soon after; access and chamber lifting stretch it. From your order, the engineer we employ in Kanpur is on KDA land immediately, or by the end of the following business day. Open township land goes quickly with high frequency radar, while parked vehicles, gates and traffic slow work in built-up colonies. Corporation roads run to a different rhythm; compare how long a Kanpur Nagar Nigam utility survey takes.

Table note: levels and boundaries can be added to any row with a topographic survey on the same base.

What paperwork should you gather first?

Anything that shows where services were meant to go, even if it is decades old. Records never replace the scan, yet they show where to add cross-lines and whose assets to look for. The sanctioned scheme layout, colony service sheets, shifting drawings from past road jobs, route records from Central UP Gas, KESCo or telecom operators, and chamber photos all help. Where nothing exists, we widen the corridor and open more chambers, and the quote says so.

What is the ground like for radar?

Mostly Ganga alluvium: good for radar when dry, much weaker near the river and in waterlogged low land. In geophysical terms, the radar is an echo timer: brief electromagnetic waves leave the antenna, strike buried objects and return as reflected signals whose delay gives depth. A test pass at the start of each KDA site shows how far down those signals return, and that depth is printed on the sheet. Kanpur crew and site notes: GPR survey in Kanpur details.

What does a KDA survey cost?

The usual per-metre card applies, with a minimum per project and long-order slabs.

  • Standard GPR scan: ₹24 per metre
  • L-section with depth profile: ₹32 per metre
  • Minimum order: ₹1,00,000 per project
  • Whole-order discount: 25% above 100 km, 40% above 500 km, 50% above 1,000 km

For example, 14 km of scheme roads at the standard rate cost ₹3,36,000; ten bore crossings profiled as L-sections at 60 m each, 600 m in all, add ₹19,200. Trial holes for QL-A are dug by the contractor and recorded by us. GST is extra, and chargeable mobilisation, should there be any, is a separate line in our quotation.

How do QL-A pits and parcels get coordinates?

Every QL-A trial pit needs a fixed position and level, or its proof is lost once backfilled. We record each with a total station at every exposed QL-A pit and hold the job on control from DGPS work across Kanpur parcels. On New Kanpur City land, spread over several former villages, that control lets parcel boundaries, field drains and radar lines from different days join up. The SUE drawing then gives each of the utility lines a quality level and coordinates.

Who scans KDA land, and for whom?

Mezux Touch, a firm surveying utilities since 2003, with its own engineers on 58 company radars and 18 drilling rigs. Site work stays with our staff under ISO 45001, 14001 and 9001 audits. Its crews have carried out utility surveys on KDA projects under the authority's own work orders. They also work for the builders, drilling firms and consultants delivering its schemes. Frequently asked questions

Is a SUE survey more expensive than a normal GPR scan?

Not per metre: the rate is identical. The extra cost comes from trial holes at QL-A points, which the contractor digs and we record.

Who excavates the QL-A pits?

The contractor does, working under our direction, and we measure and record what is exposed as utility data for the design.

Can you survey a bore path under GT Road?

Yes. We scan the bore line and both pits under GT Road and give each service the drill must avoid a depth figure.

Do you work for KDA directly?

Yes. Some of our KDA scans were done on direct work orders from the authority; others came through the contractors and consultants on its projects.
