Kanpur Nagar Nigam GPR Survey for Sewers and Drains
Mill-era sewers, KESCo feeders and Central UP Gas mains traced under the streets of the old Manchester of the East, mapped as wide corridors rather than thin lines.
Quick AnswerA Kanpur Nagar Nigam GPR survey sorts the services under a corporation street by owner and depth before the breaker comes in. Live KESCo cables and gas mains share that space with brick sewers and dead mill pipes. Interceptor and drain jobs shift during design, so we scan a broad band with ground penetrating radar (GPR); read details of utility corridor mapping.
What goes into a Kanpur Nagar Nigam utility survey?
It puts every drain, sewer, main, KESCo cable, gas pipe and telecom duct below a corporation street onto one depth-marked sheet, ahead of excavation. On a ground penetrating radar survey, radar waves sent into the road bounce back from pipes and ducts of any material. The locator confirms which cables carry current, and the merged result serves the road-cut file, the designers and the site gang.
Its 110 wards are run by a corporation constituted under the Uttar Pradesh Municipal Corporation Act, 1959. Few Indian cities hold as much history below their roads. The mill era that earned Kanpur the name "Manchester of the East" left trunk sewers, process water lines and cable routes behind. Many outlived their factories and appear on no current drawing.
What makes old Kanpur hard to map?
Layers of live, replaced and abandoned services from more than a century of industry, some laid by owners who no longer exist. A widening trench near a former mill can meet a brick sewer, a cast-iron main, a disused process pipe and a fibre duct within a couple of metres. Older wards hold deep brick and stoneware sewers, replaced mains often sit beside the old ones, and industrial pipes cross public roads between former works. Radar shows all of these buried utilities, while chamber checks, locator work and the odd trial hole decide which are live.
Every line we cannot confirm as live is marked "unconfirmed", so nobody treats an old pipe as safe to cut or a live one as dead.
Who owns which line under a Kanpur road?
Several bodies, and the most expensive mistakes are with the power and gas networks.
| Kanpur service | Whom to ask | What a strike costs |
|---|---|---|
| Drinking water and sewerage | The Nagar Nigam's water works wing | Taps run dry, the trench floods |
| Power at 11 kV and LT | Kanpur Electricity Supply Company (KESCo) | Blackout and a real chance of injury |
| PNG mains and services | Central UP Gas Ltd | Gas escape, area cleared, work halted for days |
| Fibre and telecom | Each operator on the route | Lost circuits and a repair bill |
| Nalas and storm drains | Nagar Nigam, or whoever holds the road | Standing water at the next rain |
Table note: where a trench must also be tied to true coordinates, we add a DGPS survey for Kanpur sites to the same order.
Why map a corridor instead of a line?
Because Kanpur's big works, such as sewer interceptors along drains and arterial widening, move during design. A strip wide enough for the alignment to shift saves a second visit. Under the Namami Gange programme, drains that once ran straight into the Ganga were tapped into the sewer system, the Sisamau nala best known among them. Such works need the whole strip beside the drain mapped.

How does the metro affect city-centre streets?
It has already moved many services, so ask for the diversion records before digging nearby. Kanpur Metro's first line opened from IIT Kanpur to Moti Jheel in December 2021 and reached Kanpur Central underground in 2025. Its section on to Naubasta passed its statutory safety inspection in mid-2026. Around stations, services now sit in positions that older Nagar Nigam drawings do not show.
What does the ground do to the radar?
Kanpur stands on Ganga alluvium, workable for radar but wetter and more clayey towards the river. Dry sand has low electrical conductivity, so the GPR data reaches below most services. Near the river, in low wards and around leaking mains, the image dies off earlier, so taped manhole depths and the locator carry more of the load. What should a Kanpur road-cut drawing show?
Enough for the reviewing engineer to see what the trench will cross and how deep. Fees, forms and restoration terms are the Nagar Nigam's business. Our sheet shows the trench or bore with its length and width, and every one of the underground utilities in that strip coloured by type and tagged with its owner. Each crossing carries a depth, flagged where measured. Manholes, valve boxes and feeder pillars are plotted, and lines not identified and mapped with certainty are dashed with a note.
We issue the utility maps as a PDF for the file and as AutoCAD for the designer.
What does it cost in Kanpur?
A per-metre rate, a project minimum and slab discounts.
- Standard GPR scan: ₹24 per metre
- L-section with depth profile: ₹32 per metre
- Minimum order: ₹1,00,000 per project
- Whole-order discount: 25% above 100 km, 40% above 500 km, 50% above 1,000 km
A 9 km interceptor corridor scanned at the standard rate comes to ₹2,16,000. L-sections at 40 crossings of 20 m each, 800 m in all, add ₹25,600. GST is extra. Why do interceptor jobs need levels?
Tapping a nala into an interceptor only works if the new sewer can fall to it. On such jobs we read the nala bed, outfall and chamber levels with a total station along the nala bank, and tie the corridor to DGPS control for Kanpur works. Old mill pipes and live mains found by radar are then shown as levels, not only as depths. The designer can see where a gravity line will clash with existing utility lines, and the wide base still serves when the alignment shifts.
Which crews map Kanpur Nagar Nigam works?
Mezux Touch staff, with radar from the company's own fleet. That fleet numbers 58 GPR systems. The firm's utility survey work dates from 2003, none of it is sub-let, and ISO 45001, 14001 and 9001 certificates apply. Those crews have handled Kanpur Nagar Nigam projects under the corporation's direct orders. They also work for the firms carrying out its interceptor and road construction projects, and for their consultants. For Kanpur utility mapping, use our quote form for Kanpur to send the route.
Frequently asked questions
Among Kanpur's old mill pipes, can you say which are still live?
Often, by checking connections at chambers and tracing metallic pipes with the locator. Anything we cannot confirm is marked unconfirmed, with a trial hole suggested where it matters.
Do you need permission to open manholes?
Yes. The contractor or client arranges access with the owning body, and our crew works alongside their staff where required.
Is gas pipeline detection included?
Yes. Steel gas mains trace well with the locator; polyethylene service pipes are found by radar and by following the route markers.
How soon can you start in Kanpur?
Straight away, and no later than the next business day, since our surveyor is Kanpur-based. Billable travel, if any, is a separate quotation item.
Where can I see your other Kanpur utility work?
Yes, with local examples and coverage: utility line survey in Kanpur details.
