Chandigarh Engineering Dept GPR Survey for V-Roads
Utility mapping for Chandigarh Administration roads, public buildings, bridges and crossings, drawn so designers and drillers can use it.
Quick AnswerA Chandigarh Engineering Dept GPR survey maps the services under Administration roads, campuses and bridge approaches before design or digging begins. We scan with ground penetrating radar (GPR), trace cables with a locator and deliver a CAD drawing with depth bands. For trenchless crossings of arterial roads, see HDD route survey.
Which Engineering Department works need a utility survey?
Any Chandigarh Administration project that will cut, bore or pile into serviced ground benefits from a Chandigarh engineering department utility survey. Road widening, junctions, underpasses, flyovers, public buildings, cycle tracks, lighting and bridge approaches all qualify, and the survey sets out what is buried before design is fixed.
The Engineering Department of the UT Administration, headed by a Chief Engineer, plans, builds and maintains the larger V-roads, bridges, government offices, hospitals, colleges and other public buildings. The Union Territory is run by an Administrator, a post held by the Governor of Punjab, and these works go through its departments, not the Municipal Corporation.
Typical projects where a survey changes the design include:
- Widening a V-2 or V-3 road, where berm and verge services must be shifted or protected.
- Grade-separated junctions, such as the long-discussed Tribune Chowk flyover, where piers and ramps need clear ground.
- New blocks on campuses whose buried utilities were never drawn together.
- Cycle track extensions beside cable and pipe corridors.
How do you map services inside a campus or complex?
Inside a boundary wall we map the whole site as one network, not only the strip of new work. Government campuses, hospitals and office blocks such as those in Sector 9 and Sector 17 grew in stages. Each stage added cables, supply pipes, drains and data ducts, with partial records spread over several files.
We scan paths and service roads on a grid and trace every metal line to its feeder or chamber. Results are tied to building corners, so facility staff can reuse the utility maps. The method mirrors our utility corridor mapping details page for long roads, applied within a site.
The Capitol Complex, part of the Le Corbusier group listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2016, is a special case. Non-destructive GPR suits heritage settings where opening the ground is not acceptable, and any work there follows the Administration's conditions.
Can a V-road be crossed without opening it?
Yes. Horizontal directional drilling takes a cable or pipe under a wide arterial road, but only if the bore path is clear of the services already there. Chandigarh's arterials are broad, with green verges, cycle tracks and service lanes on each side, so a crossing passes under several bands of utilities before it reaches the far side.
We scan the entry and exit pits and a strip along the bore line, then give the driller a depth-band profile for all pipes and cables on the line. Our own fleet of 18 HDD rigs means the people drawing it have stood beside a drill head. To see HDD route survey in more detail, the service page sets out the full process.
What changes near bridges, choes and drains?
Near the Sukhna Choe, the N-Choe and seasonal streams, services change depth, cross on structures and pass through old fill, so bridge and culvert approaches need their own scan. Services carried on bridge brackets drop steeply at each abutment, and embankment fill holds boulders and debris that clutter the radar image.
Echoes of radar pulses are what this geophysical tool reads, and Shivalik outwash returns many from boulders, densest around the choes. We tighten the grid and confirm lines with a locator. For depth range and ground notes, see the GPR survey in Chandigarh details page.
How do our engineers approach an Administration job?
Records first, then a scan plan matched to the design question, then field work and a drawing that states its confidence. We gather the department's and service owners' drawings, decide between a plan, an L-section or both, and agree trial pits in advance. The reasoning for tricity sites is written up in our engineers' notes.
Useful records include original road and building drawings, earlier shifting plans, owners' cable route sketches and photos of past trenches. Even a partial set shows where to look harder and where records and ground disagree.
Some Administration roads meet Punjab roads at the Mohali boundary, so a project can cross jurisdictions unnoticed. On the Punjab side, see our page on getting an MC Mohali utility survey done right.
Chandigarh engineering department utility survey at a glance

| Flyover or underpass | Pier and ramp footprints, diversion routes | Plan plus L-section |
| Campus building | Whole campus network of underground utilities | Site utility plan for facility staff |
| Road crossing by HDD | Entry and exit pits, bore strip | Bore-path depth profile |
| Bridge approach | Both abutments and embankments | Plan with structure-mounted utility lines |

Bridge approaches and culvert levels
Where a V-road crosses a choe on a bridge or culvert, the approach ramps hold services at changing depths. We level the deck, approaches and stream bed with a total station and fix control on both sides by DGPS. The radar L-section across an approach then shows the true ground line. Cables on bridge brackets and pipes diving under the bed sit in the same frame. For campus works, the same pair of instruments gives plinth levels and line positions on one plan for the architect. What does a survey for UT works cost?
GPR is charged at ₹24 per metre, or ₹32 per metre when the job needs an L-section. The minimum order for Chandigarh is ₹1,00,000. Whole-order discounts of 25%, 40% and 50% apply above 100 km, 500 km and 1,000 km respectively, and GST is extra. A team member based in the city takes up the job on confirmation, or one working day later at most. Where travel cost applies, the quote shows it.
A single 800 m flyover footprint with L-section comes to ₹25,600; being under the minimum, it is charged ₹1,00,000. Bundling several department works into one order changes the picture: 4.5 km of mixed road and campus scanning at the standard rate comes to ₹1,08,000 plus GST. Rates for every service are on the GPR price list, and you can use our quote form for Chandigarh to send drawings.
Work for the Chandigarh Administration's Engineering Department reaches us as orders from the department itself and through the builders and consultants on UT projects. Either way, Mezux Touch employees carry out each ground penetrating radar survey on our own radars, with nothing handed on. For Engineering Department utility mapping, send the drawings through the form.
Frequently asked questions
Can you work in heritage areas such as the Capitol Complex?
GPR is non-destructive and suits heritage construction projects. Any work there follows the conditions the Administration sets, and access is arranged by the client.
Is GPR safe to use inside a hospital campus?
Yes. It emits low-power radio waves and no ionising radiation, and the equipment is quiet enough for occupied buildings.
Can you match our CAD layer standard?
Yes. Send your template or layer list and the GPR data is delivered on your layers, with a PDF set for review.
Which parts of the tricity do you cover?
Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula and the surrounding towns; read about survey coverage in Chandigarh.
Can the drilling be done by the same company?
We own 18 HDD rigs, so the crossing itself can be quoted alongside the survey if you prefer one contractor.
Do you scan at night on arterial roads?
Where traffic makes daytime work unsafe, night scanning of utility lines can be arranged and is quoted separately.
