Bengaluru North City Corporation GPR Survey in Hebbal
Lake valleys, metro piers on Ballari Road and fast-grown layouts: buried-service mapping from Hebbal and Hennur up to Yelahanka for Bengaluru North City Corporation work.
Quick AnswerA Bengaluru North City Corporation GPR survey shows where BWSSB pipes, valley storm drains, BESCOM cables and fibre bundles run before a road is trenched, bored or widened. It covers the stretch from Hebbal and Hennur up to Yelahanka. The north mixes fast-built layouts, old village cores and lake valleys, each with its own risks. For the formats we deliver, see details of utility mapping.
How is a Bengaluru North City Corporation utility survey carried out?
The crew runs ground penetrating radar (GPR) passes and a locator sweep along the planned line, lifts chamber covers and digs a pit wherever doubt remains. Each line then gets a depth and a probable owner on the drawing. North of the core the usual finds are BWSSB pipes, large valley drains, BESCOM feeders and GAIL Gas mains. Fibre utility lines multiply each year along Ballari Road and the Outer Ring Road.
Notified on 2 September 2025, the North body is one of the five successors to BBMP under the Greater Bengaluru Governance Act, 2024. At about 158 square kilometres it is the second largest, with 72 wards in two zones, Byatarayanapura and Yelahanka, and its base at Yelahanka. It was still awaiting its first council election in November 2026. What makes the north different from the core?
Most of it was built recently and quickly, so the risk lies in lines that went in fast and were never recorded well. Ward names such as Thindlu, Jakkur, Nagavara, Hennur, HBR Layout, Kalyan Nagar, Banaswadi, Hebbal and Yelahanka Satellite Town show the spread. Some were planned layouts decades ago, and others were farmland until recently.
Village cores sit inside newer layouts, apartment clusters join public mains at the road edge, and arterial roads carry trunk mains, HT cables and fibre side by side. Records are scattered between developers, old BBMP zones and utilities, so every one is checked on the ground. Below Hebbal, the core's streets are planned another way by our Bengaluru Central City Corporation utility survey team.
How do metro and road works on the airport side affect a survey?
They put new structures and freshly diverted lines next to old services, so the ground picture changes month by month. The Namma Metro airport line, part of the Blue Line from KR Puram, runs through this belt via Hebbal and Yelahanka to Kempegowda International Airport. Piers, stations and diversions along Ballari Road and the Outer Ring Road have moved many services.
Near piers or stations we request the metro's diversion drawings and scan tightly around foundations. Fresh backfill can hide the buried utilities it was meant to protect, so key crossings are confirmed by pit.
Why do lakes and valleys matter underground?
The north drains through a chain of valleys and lakes, and the ground near them is wetter and softer. Hebbal, Jakkur and Yelahanka sit beside lakes, and the large storm drains feeding them cross many roads. Lake silt and dry ridges treat this geophysical method differently, since its electromagnetic waves echo at every change in the ground. Near drains and lake edges, wet silt and clay with high electrical conductivity cut that reach, while dry red-soil ridges let the signal travel well.
The drains are mapped as major services, both banks are scanned where a route crosses them, and low ground gets more pits. A comparison of north-side red soil, granite and silt is kept at GPR survey in Bengaluru details.
How do we handle new layouts with thin records?
By surveying them as an area when the client needs a lasting record. For new layouts and large campuses, a block-by-block scan builds utility maps that later contractors can rely on. The method behind those records appears under smart city underground mapping at a glance. For a single route, a corridor scan is quicker and cheaper.
The commonest surprise in newer pockets is a builder's private line crossing the road to a site opposite. It may be a borewell pipe, a temporary cable that became permanent or an early sewer link, and none reach any record. Patched trenches, small chambers and cable markers give them away, and the crew scans across these signs before the main survey.
Property owners and builders often ask the same few things before booking; our guide covers the questions owners usually ask.
What will you meet in each part of the north?
Ground, services and access shift noticeably as you move across the corporation.
| North Bengaluru pocket | Below the surface | Where we concentrate |
|---|---|---|
| Hebbal and the airport road | Bulk water mains, BESCOM HT feeders, lines moved for the metro | Dense passes round piers and junctions |
| Hennur, HBR Layout, Kalyan Nagar | Layout mains with plot connections every few metres | Short cross passes along any trench line |
| Yelahanka and Attur | Older planned layouts mixed with village cores | Locator tracing in the lanes, covers lifted |
| Around Jakkur, Hebbal and Yelahanka lakes | Major storm-water drains, soft wet soil | Drains mapped as services, more pits |
Table note: for corridors that continue into other corporations, see Greater Bengaluru Authority utility survey by Mezux Touch.
What does the survey cost?
₹24 per metre for a standard GPR scan and ₹32 per metre with an L-section, with a ₹1,00,000 minimum per project. If a northern job carries mobilisation or travel, that charge is itemised for you. Whole-order discounts are 25% above 100 km, 40% above 500 km and 50% above 1,000 km, and GST is added. A standard scan through 9 km of a new layout totals ₹2,16,000 before GST, and a 2.5 km fibre route is charged the project floor. Our Bengaluru-resident engineer can reach a northern ward within hours of booking, and no later than the close of the next working day.
How are valley drain levels handled in the north?
The valley floor and drain inverts are levelled against a benchmark, so road and drain designers share the same heights. New layouts often stand above the valleys, and a sewer or cable can cross a primary drain with little clearance. Control from DGPS surveying for North Bengaluru is carried down into the valley with a total station level traverse. Each detected crossing then gets its depth below the drain bed or the road.
Who carries out GPR survey in the North corporation, and how do we begin?
Our own engineers with company-owned equipment do every job, and a route sketch or KMZ is enough to start. No shift has been sub-let since 2003, and the three ISO standards (9001, 14001, 45001) govern how each one runs. The North corporation has placed its own work orders with us. Bookings arrive equally often from layout developers, road builders, consultants and utilities running construction projects in its wards. For utility mapping north of Hebbal, send the ward name, the line and any old sheets, then price your Bengaluru job.
Frequently asked questions
Will you go past Yelahanka, out towards Devanahalli and the airport?
Yes, both inside and beyond the corporation's limits. Beyond the corporation boundary, see survey coverage in Bengaluru.
Can you add levels and road features to the drawing?
Yes. Book a topographic survey for Bengaluru sites with the scan, and both datasets use one set of coordinates.
Can you survey inside an apartment campus?
Yes, with the owner's permission. Campus-owned pipes and cables appear in a separate colour from public underground utilities.
Is radar reliable near lakes?
Less so on wet lake-edge silt. A ground penetrating radar survey near Jakkur or Hebbal lake therefore leans on locator runs and pits.
Do you need the metro's permission to scan near a pier?
BMRCL has to agree before anyone works beside its structures, and the project owner obtains that consent. The scan and the GPR data review follow their conditions.
How soon will the drawing be ready?
Drawings for a few kilometres follow some working days after the last pass, and long northern corridors are sent in parts.
