Quick AnswerA topographic survey in Itanagar records the slope of a hillside plot near the Senki valley in close detail. It shows dense heights, contour lines at 0.5–1 m, each bank edge, jhora and drain, and the crest and foot of every cutting and wall. Architects then fix benches, size walls and total the earthwork. Dry months, October to April, suit the fieldwork. Read about topographic survey for Itanagar sites.

What should a topographic survey in Itanagar put on paper?

Above all the gradient: dense spot heights, half-metre or one-metre contours and each sudden change of slope. Streams, drains and the crest and foot of cuttings and walls follow, because on a hillside they decide where a house can stand and where rainwater escapes. A level plan of a flat site can get by with a regular grid. On Itanagar ground a grid alone misses the bank edges, gullies and benches that matter most, so the crew follows the shape of the land instead.

How steep and wet is the ground?

Steep enough that most building plots are benched, and wet enough that drainage is designed before anything else. The capital spreads along narrow valleys and up ridge sides between Banderdewa, Naharlagun and Itanagar, with the Senki and many smaller hill streams cutting through. Heavy monsoon rain brings slope failures most years; in June 2024 a cloudburst flooded homes near Energy Park and Bank Tinali and submerged parts of NH-415. A survey taken in the dry months should therefore record old slide scars, seepage lines and silted drains, not only the ground surface.

From survey to earthwork: how are walls and benches sized?

From sections cut through the surveyed terrain model along the steepest lines of the plot.

Illustration: the hillside is excavated into a flat bench with a breast wall behind it; the valley side is built up and held by a retaining wall, and a drain follows the base of the excavation. The measured section sets the size of each.

Designers use those sections to set the bench level, size the retaining wall and route the drain, and the same model gives cut and fill volumes. A site plan drawn from the survey shows each bench and wall in plan, and its pillars are reused when construction layouts for footings are pegged. Getting the toe of an existing wall or the bed of a stream wrong by half a metre can move a building line. Those features are measured as points, not traced from imagery.

Which features does the crew pick up?

  • Breaks of slope, ridge lines and gully beds, with spot levels between them.
  • Roads with edge and crown levels, hairpin bends and cross-drainage culverts.
  • Retaining and breast walls, top and toe, with their condition noted.
  • Streams and jhoras, with bed level, bank tops and the high-water mark if visible.
  • Buildings, trees with girth, electric poles and water lines in view.

Buried water mains and cables along hill roads need a separate scan; for that work, see GPR survey in Itanagar.

Which instruments suit Itanagar slopes?

Two kinds together in most cases: GNSS on the pillars and open terraces, optical instruments beneath trees and close to walls. Pillar coordinates and heights are settled first (what you receive from a DGPS survey in Itanagar). On a forested spur the bulk of the detail is then shot with a total station, which needs only a narrow sightline through the leaves. Read getting a total station survey in Itanagar done right for its routine. Our two RTK mapping drones can help on large, open, grass-covered slopes, but canopy and cloud limit them, so they are used only where ground checks prove them.

Brahmaputra floodplain and the Guwahati hills pose other problems, described in topographic survey in Guwahati for your site.

What helps us plan a hill survey?

A few details sent in advance save a wasted climb.

  1. A location pin and the nearest motorable point, with how long the walk-in takes.
  2. The purpose: house bench, road widening, slide repair or a large institutional campus.
  3. Whether the slope is under jungle, bamboo, terraced cultivation or grass.
  4. Older drawings of the plot, a hand sketch with measurements included, for us to connect with.

A typical request is a road owner who must widen a stretch near a known slip zone and needs cross-sections every 10–20 m plus the full slope above and below. Another is a family plot on a ridge side where only a narrow bench is possible and the architect wants to know how much the hill gives before designing. Both need the same care at bank edges.

How much does a topographic survey cost in Itanagar?

Up to one acre from ₹15,000; 1–10 acres ₹4,000 per acre; above 10 acres ₹2,500 per acre; a road strip ₹15,000 per km.

  • Up to 1 acre: from ₹15,000.
  • 1–10 acres: ₹4,000 per acre.
  • Above 10 acres: ₹2,500 per acre.
  • Road or route strip: ₹15,000 per km.

GST is extra, and any travel cost, where it applies, is set out in the written quote, which gives the final amount. Steep wooded plots take longer per acre than open ones, and we say so in the quote, not later. Send a pin, an approximate size and a few phone photos, and talk to our team about Itanagar. Frequently asked questions

Is fieldwork possible in June or July?

Only where access is safe. Fresh slips and swollen streams make some points dangerous, so monsoon work is planned day by day.

Do you mark the plot boundary as well?

We can, against the LPC or allotment papers; a Private Land Surveyor in Itanagar handles that part.

What is a breakline?

A line along a sharp change in ground, such as a bank top, that the terrain model must not smooth across.

Is a drone survey enough on a hill plot?

Rarely under tree cover. Drones help on open slopes, but levels under canopy still need ground instruments.

I am new to this. What is the survey, in plain words?

A scaled drawing of how the land rises and falls, plus what stands on it. Our guide has more on what is a topographical survey.
