Quick AnswerA total station survey in Gangtok keeps going down the stairways and between the stacked houses where receivers fail. The instrument sights a prism and logs the angle and range to it. We use it for detail plans, steep-slope levels and stake-out of footings and walls. Plots up to 1 acre start from ₹10,000 plus GST. A surveyor living in Gangtok sets up immediately or within one working day. Method in full: total station survey for Gangtok sites.

Why choose an optical instrument over GNSS in Gangtok?

Anywhere buildings, slopes and overhangs crowd the sky, which describes most of central Gangtok. There the instrument carries on station by station, sighting the prism through courtyards and down stepped lanes. A GNSS rover in the same spots would wait for a fix that never firms up.

Houses in the older parts of town stand close together, stacked down the hillside. Many have four or five floors on the valley side and one or two at road level, and steps run between them instead of streets. A global positioning system receiver in those gaps sees a thin strip of sky. Our instrument needs only a line of sight to the next set-up and to the pole, because it measures angles and distances by electronic distance measurement. The survey therefore follows the footpaths a resident would take. To keep the plan on the national grid, two control points are first fixed on an open ridge spot, and the run starts from that pair. The method is set out under DGPS survey in Gangtok by Mezux Touch. For the basics, our explainer lets you read total station principles from the ground up.

How is height measured when the slope is this steep?

Each steep sight gives an inclined range and a zenith angle, and the rise between the two ends is worked out from those two numbers. On flat ground the vertical angle is small and forgiving. On a Gangtok sight it may be 25° or more. Small errors in the instrument height, the prism height or the plumb of the pole then show up directly in the levels.

α = 28°slope distance S = 48.00 mhorizontal HD = S cos α = 42.38 mΔV = S sin α= 22.53 mHeight on a steep sight (example)ΔH = ΔV + instrument height − prism height1.50 m instrument, 1.80 m prism: ΔH = 22.53 + 1.50 − 1.80 = 22.23 m
Illustration: a single uphill sight on a Gangtok terrace. The height gain is worked out by trigonometry from slope range and zenith angle, and the taped heights of tripod and pole are then allowed for.

Our crews measure both heights with a tape at every set-up, keep the prism pole on a bipod for long steep sights, and read critical points from two stations. When the two heights agree within a few millimetres, the spot level goes on the drawing.

How is a stepped building pegged out on the hillside?

Putting column points, wall lines and depths on a site whose ground falls away from one grid line to the next. A building here often steps down the slope, so footings on the downhill side sit several metres below those on the road side. Working from the engineer's DWG, we peg every footing on whichever terrace it falls. Its dig depth is quoted against a temporary bench mark on firm rock or old masonry close by.

  • Column and footing centres from the engineer's coordinates.
  • Retaining wall alignment with top and toe levels.
  • Floor levels transferred up as the frame rises.
  • Check survey of what was built against what was drawn.

On these hillsides, time spent on construction layouts grows with the number of levels, not the plot size, so we bill it per crew-day.

Which Gangtok jobs call for a total station?

Building extensions in the centre, wall and drain works along roads, and plot boundaries in lanes too tight for DGPS. Hotels and homes near MG Marg add floors and need the existing structure drawn first. The municipal corporation's road and drain works need the edges, walls and culverts picked accurately. Where neighbours dispute an edge between packed houses, our Private Land Surveyor in Gangtok team takes over with this same instrument. Cables and pipes crowd the narrow road edge, so open the utility survey guide for Gangtok before a pit goes in there.

Cables under the road edge need radar, not this instrument: GPR survey in Gangtok at a glance (radar work carries a ₹1,00,000 floor).

How are stations linked through a stepped town?

Through a traverse, meaning a string of set-ups observed one after another, opening on fixed marks and closing on fixed marks again. In Gangtok the chain often follows a road, drops down a stairway and comes back up another, closing on the starting control. Any error then shows as a gap at the end, and we adjust it only if it is within tolerance; if not, the leg is re-measured before the crew leaves. Short legs are unavoidable on hairpin roads, so stations are set on solid ground, with forced centring where the same station is used twice. Definitions sit in our glossary: more on Total Station Traverse.

What does a total station survey in Gangtok cost?

A plot up to 1 acre starts from ₹10,000; each extra acre is ₹3,000; stake-out is ₹8,000 per crew-day. GST is extra.

  • Detail survey up to 1 acre: from ₹10,000.
  • ₹3,000 per extra acre, so a 3-acre hotel site comes to ₹16,000.
  • Layout or stake-out: ₹8,000 per crew-day; a building on three terraces might need two days.
  • Travel, if applicable: a separate line in the quote.

The drawing office normally turns the field file round in three working days. For setting-out, mail the structural DWG; for an as-built plan, a map pin and the items you need shown are enough. Then talk to our team about Gangtok.

Frequently asked questions

My footings sit on three levels — can you peg them all?

Yes. Each footing is marked on its own level, and excavation depths are given from a temporary benchmark.

Do I need DGPS as well?

Only when the plan must join a government or neighbouring drawing. A standalone house can work on an assumed site grid.

Can you also produce contours of the plot?

Yes. Levels taken during the detail survey can be contoured, and a full ground model is covered under topographic survey in Gangtok for your site.

Is the price the same as in Guwahati?

The field rates are identical, and any travel charge, if applicable, appears in the quote. Check what a total station survey in Guwahati costs.

Can you draw an existing building for an extension?

Yes. We measure the outline, floor levels and key features so the architect starts from the real structure.

How do you work on narrow stairs?

With short instrument legs, a bipod for the prism pole and extra checks, because sights are short and steep.
