Topographic survey — West Bengal
Topographic Survey in Kolkata for Flat Delta Land
Heights for a city barely clear of tide level: roads, drains, plots, ponds and reclaimed patches, all plotted on MSL.
Quick AnswerA topographic survey in Kolkata maps drains, ponds and all visible features at close spacing, with spot levels and quarter-metre contour lines tied to MSL. Between the Hooghly bank and the eastern wetlands the land drops by only a few metres, so any drainage scheme depends on these numbers. Sites up to 1 acre start at ₹15,000 plus GST. Fieldwork can begin the day you approve, or the next working day, because one of our surveyors is based in Kolkata. Background: topographic survey for Kolkata sites.
Which details does a Kolkata plot survey pick up?
Densely spaced spot heights, fine contours, drain inverts, pond margins and every feature in view, each tied to MSL. With the whole city spread over a height range of only a few metres, those readings tell you whether a plot keeps its feet dry in a hard monsoon.
Architects use the resulting site plan to fix a plinth above the road. Builders work out from them the truckloads of soil required to lift low ground. Factory owners need them to plan yard drainage, and lenders occasionally ask for them on plots that look suspiciously low.
Which way does Kolkata's ground slope?
Away from the river: the highest land is the natural bank of the Hooghly, and the surface falls gently eastward towards the wetlands. The old city grew on that raised bank, while the east was marsh and salt lakes until it was filled for Salt Lake and, later, New Town. Storm water and sewage are carried east along channels towards the East Kolkata Wetlands, which have long used the city's wastewater for fish ponds and farming.
The fall is tiny over long distances, so drainage depends on pumping and on outfalls staying open. When heavy rain coincides with a high tide in the river system, water backs up and low pockets flood first. A level survey shows exactly where your plot stands in that picture.
What should the levels show on a Kolkata plot?
The plot's height against the road and its drains, and every hollow, pond or filled patch inside it.
- Road crown and kerb levels in front, with the gate threshold and existing floor.
- Invert levels of the nearest drains, and which way they run.
- Edges, water level and, where needed, depth of any pond on the land.
- Soft, low patches whose ground levels suggest an old pond was filled.
The last point is more than engineering. Bengal's rules limit the filling-in of ponds and tanks, so any pond on the plot, or evidence of a former one, belongs in your lawyer's file. We draw what we find and leave the legal reading to them. For larger ponds and tanks, a boat-based depth survey is available as a separate item.
Where in the region do we take levels?
From the riverside belt to the eastern fringe. In Howrah and Taratala the jobs are mostly factory yards and sheds being reorganised, with new construction layouts drawn over the levels. In New Town and Rajarhat, open land is laid out for housing and campuses. The question there is how much fill is needed, and a cut and fill estimate from the digital terrain model answers it. In the older south and central wards, rebuilds often start on plots now lying lower than a road resurfaced again and again. Buried services on such plots are the subject of our page on GPR survey in Kolkata. A comparable coastal plain to the south is covered at topographic survey in Bhubaneswar for your site.
How do we carry out the survey?
Control by satellite, heights by level loops, detail by instrument. For the satellite marks and their benchmark tie, read DGPS survey in Kolkata: scope, time and cost. Auto-level runs then take heights across the plot, and each loop must close within ±2.5 mm per km, since a few centimetres count on land this flat. Compound walls, lamp posts, tree trunks and drain edges are picked up by the optical instrument. The instrument's Kolkata deliverables appear on what you receive from a total station survey in Kolkata. Contours are drawn at 0.2–0.25 m unless the designer asks for something else.
The best time is between November and May. During the rains, standing water hides the real ground and soft fill gives under the staff.

Fees for a topographic survey in Kolkata
A site up to 1 acre starts from ₹15,000; between 1 and 10 acres the rate is ₹4,000 per acre, falling to ₹2,500 per acre above 10 acres. A road or route strip is ₹15,000 per km. A pond or lake depth survey starts from ₹50,000 per water body up to 10 hectares, with ₹4,000 per extra hectare. GST is charged on top, and any mobilisation cost, where applicable, sits on a single line of the written quote. A surveyor lives in the city, so levels in Garia, New Town or across the river in Howrah begin the same day as your order or within one working day. Frequently asked questions
How high should my plinth be?
That is your architect's or engineer's decision. Our levels give them the road, drain and ground heights to decide from.
Can you tell if a pond was filled on my land?
We can show low, soft patches and compare them with old maps you provide. Proof of history comes from records, not from levels alone.
Is my legal boundary marked on the plan?
Only the walls as built. For a comparison with the dag and khatian records, see land surveyor in Kolkata.
What is a topographic survey, in short?
A plan of the ground with its heights and features; for detail, open Our note on what is a topographical survey.
Can levels be taken inside a running factory?
Yes, normally on a weekend or a quiet shift, agreed with your safety officer.
Do you survey ponds by boat?
Yes, for larger water bodies, with an echo sounder and satellite positioning; small ponds are measured from the bank.
