Aerial mapping
Drone Survey Services in India
Orthomosaics, terrain models and contour drawings from RTK drones, tied to DGPS control fixed by our own field crew.
Quick AnswerA drone survey in India captures overlapping aerial photos of a site and turns them into a map-accurate image, a surface model and contours. Our RTK mapping drones fly against ground control fixed by DGPS, so every feature sits on real coordinates. It suits open land from a few acres upwards; to compare costs, see what a topographic survey costs.
What does a drone survey in India actually give you?
A drone survey in India gives you a measured aerial picture of the whole site, with heights, in a few days rather than a few weeks. Hundreds of overlapping photographs are processed into an orthomosaic (a map-accurate photo), a digital surface model and, after filtering, a ground model from which contours and volumes are drawn. Every pixel sits on real coordinates because the model is tied to points we fix on the ground with DGPS.
That makes it useful well beyond a pretty picture. Planners read road widths and building footprints off the orthomosaic. Engineers take spot levels and earthwork quantities from the terrain model. Owners use the image to show exactly what stood on the land on a given date, which can matter in a boundary or compensation dispute.
When does a drone beat ground survey, and when does it not?
Drones win on open, large or hard-to-walk ground; ground instruments win on small, built-up or tree-covered sites. Above roughly 10 acres, flying is usually faster and cheaper per acre than walking a level grid. On a 2,000 sq ft plot between houses, a total station crew finishes before the drone has been unpacked.
- Good fits: solar and industrial land, township layouts, quarries and stockpiles, canal and road corridors, landfill sites, flood-prone farmland.
- Weak fits: dense orchards or forest (photos see the canopy, not the soil), narrow lanes, and anything under a roof.
- Mixed jobs: we fly the open part and fill gaps by ground survey, so the drawing has no blank patches.
Where trees hide the ground, a laser sensor does better than a camera because some pulses pass between leaves; our page on lidar survey rates and scope explains that option. For the ground control itself, read more about DGPS survey and how the base and rover reach centimetre level.
How is the flight planned and controlled?
The flight is planned on a map before anyone reaches site, then tied to the ground with control points that our DGPS crew fixes on the day. The illustration shows the usual pattern.
- Airspace check: under the Drone Rules, 2021, the Digital Sky airspace map marks green, yellow and red zones. Green zone flying up to 400 ft needs no permission; within 8 to 12 km of an airport perimeter the green ceiling drops to 200 ft, and yellow or red zones need permission first. If your site falls in a controlled zone, we tell you before quoting a date.
- Flight design: height, speed and overlap are chosen for the ground sample distance (the size of one pixel on the ground) that your drawing scale needs.
- Ground control: painted or panel targets are placed around the edge and centre and fixed by DGPS. A few more points are kept back as check points.
- Flying: our two RTK mapping drones fly the lines, usually in the morning when shadows are short and wind is low.
- Processing: photos are aligned, the model is adjusted to control, and the check points report the real error. That figure goes into the survey report, not just a brochure number.
The 2022 amendment to the Drone Rules replaced the old pilot licence with a remote pilot certificate, and every drone must carry a unique identification number from Digital Sky. Ask any drone surveyor, us included, for both before work starts.
What files do you receive?
You get the image, the terrain and a CAD drawing, in formats your architect, planner or contractor can open without special software.
| Deliverable | What it shows | Format |
|---|---|---|
| Orthomosaic | Map-accurate photo of the whole site | GeoTIFF, plus a compressed PDF |
| Surface model | Heights of everything visible, including roofs and trees | GeoTIFF |
| Ground model and contours | Bare-earth levels at your chosen interval | DWG, PDF |
| Volume statement | Cut, fill or stockpile quantity between two surfaces | Excel, PDF |
| Control and check points | Coordinates and residual errors | Excel / CSV |
| Boundary and features | Edges, roads, structures, drains for sharing | KMZ, SHP |
Table note: before you call, you can roughly measure your plot on a map; the acreage decides most of the price.
Contours from a drone model are only as clean as the ground filter. On farmland with standing crop or scrub, we add ground shots along drains and bunds; the steps for getting a contour survey done right apply here too.
Drone survey rates – November 2026
A drone survey starts from ₹40,000 per site for up to 25 acres, and each extra acre is ₹1,500. That covers flying, DGPS ground control, processing and the drawing set in the table above. GST is extra.
- Up to 25 acres: from ₹40,000 per site
- Above 25 acres: ₹1,500 for each additional acre
- Example: a 60-acre plot works out to ₹40,000 + 35 × ₹1,500 = ₹92,500
- Any mobilisation/travel cost, if applicable, is shown separately in the quote
The written quote fixes the final amount for your site once we know the boundary, the airspace zone and the drawing scale.
How soon can a crew fly, and where do we work?
In Delhi NCR a crew is usually on site the same day or within 1 working day; elsewhere in India a team member based in that region starts immediately or within 1 working day. On most mid-sized sites, flying and ground control fit into a single field visit. Processed files usually follow within 3 working days, and large corridors are delivered in stretches so design can start early.
With team members living in the regions we serve, we fly sites across Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab and further afield. Flights near airports, military areas and international borders take longer to clear, and some never get cleared, so share the location first.
What decides the accuracy of a drone map?
Three things: pixel size, ground control and what covers the ground. A lower flight gives smaller pixels and sharper detail but more photos to process. Well-spread control points, fixed by DGPS to 1–2 cm, hold the model in place; without them, even an RTK drone can drift in height. Bare soil, roads and hard standing model well. Water, glass roofs and moving crops do not, and heights under trees come from the canopy, not the soil.
India now uses drones at scale for land mapping; the SVAMITVA scheme maps village residential areas with drones flown by the Survey of India. Private surveys like ours do not replace official records, but the same principles of control and checking apply.
What should you send before we fly?
A boundary, a purpose and any access rules are enough to plan a drone survey in India properly. A KMZ, a Google pin with a rough sketch, or a scanned layout plan all work. Tell us what the drawing is for, because a feasibility study, a detailed design and a quantity check need different pixel sizes and contour intervals.
- Site boundary or the corner pins you already know
- Drawing scale or contour interval your consultant has asked for
- Any existing benchmark or project coordinate system to tie into
- Gate timings, security passes and who meets the crew
- Whether people, cattle or machinery will be working below the flight lines
We never fly over crowds or live operations without a plan agreed with the site in charge. On an operating plant or a busy quarry, flights are timed around shifts and the area under the lines is kept clear while the drone is up.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need government permission for a drone survey?
Not in a green zone up to 400 ft. Yellow and red zones, which include areas around airports and sensitive sites, need permission first. We check the Digital Sky airspace map before giving you a date.
Can a drone survey be used for a solar plant layout?
Yes, it is one of the most common uses, because solar land is large and open. Read when you need a topographic survey for solar plant work.
Will the drone map show my boundary from the revenue map?
It shows the physical boundary on the ground: walls, fences, bunds. Matching that with khasra or killa lines is a separate land survey step done from your papers.
How small an area is worth flying?
On our rate card, a ground topographic survey usually costs less below about 10 acres. Above that, the drone usually wins on both time and cost.
What happens if it rains or is windy on the day?
We do not fly in rain or strong wind. The crew waits or returns on the next suitable day; the quote does not change.
Can you measure a stockpile or a pit volume?
Yes. We fly the stockpile, build a surface and compute the volume against a base surface, with a short note on the method.
