Quick AnswerThe total station price in India runs from about ₹1.75 lakh to ₹5 lakh for a new manual or reflectorless instrument. Used ones start from around ₹50,000, and top-end 1-second models sit far above that. For a single plot or a short job, booking a total station survey from ₹10,000 costs far less than owning the instrument and the surveyor to run it.

What is the total station price in India today?

A new manual or reflectorless total station is listed in India at about ₹1.75 lakh to ₹5 lakh, and used instruments appear from around ₹50,000. Top-end 1-second instruments climb far higher, with one listing at ₹38 lakh. These are November 2026 marketplace asking prices, not negotiated deals.

On a large IndiaMART city listing, most new instruments sat between ₹1.75 lakh and ₹4.95 lakh, and the cheapest used one asked ₹50,0001. A TradeIndia category page showed a similar ₹2.2–5 lakh spread2. On the government e-marketplace, a reflectorless unit with 500 m non-prism range was offered at ₹2,59,700. Its printed MRP was ₹3,95,0003, a wide gap between list and selling price.

Which features push a total station machine price up?

Angle accuracy, reflectorless range, on-board software and motorisation explain most of the gap between a ₹2 lakh instrument and a ₹20 lakh one. We leave brand names out, because the features are what you pay for.

  • Angle accuracy: 5″, 2″ or 1″. At 100 m, a 5″ error shifts a point about 2.4 mm sideways and a 1″ error about 0.5 mm, and building layout rarely needs better than 2″.
  • Reflectorless range: measuring to a wall without a prism saves a staff person, and 500 m or more costs extra.
  • Software and display: road, stake-out and area programs, a touch screen and data export all add cost.
  • Motorisation: robotic instruments follow the prism so one person works alone, at a much higher price.

If the terms are new to you, our total station guide explains each part and how the instrument measures (our total station guide).

How do you read the accuracy figures on a quotation?

A total station instrument carries two accuracy numbers: angles in arc-seconds, and distance as a fixed part plus parts per million. Sellers sometimes print only the better of the prism and non-prism figures, so read both.

"2 mm + 2 ppm" means a fixed 2 mm plus 2 mm per kilometre, about 2.6 mm over 300 m. The reflectorless figure is weaker and holds only to a stated range, beyond which readings to a dark or wet surface may fail. A 5″ instrument sighting a point 200 m away can also sit almost 5 mm off sideways from angle error alone.

Field results also depend on centring, a correctly measured instrument height, a vertical prism pole and a stable tripod, so surveyors check against a known point each morning.

New or second-hand: what wears out?

The optics rarely fail; batteries, the compensator, the tribrach, the laser plummet and the keypad are what age. A used instrument with fresh calibration can serve well. Before paying for any unit, measure a known baseline in front of the seller and confirm what the price includes.

  • Batteries lose hours, and spares for older models are scarce.
  • Compensator and collimation drift after a fall, and only a test shows it.
  • Tribrach screws wear loose and quietly spoil centring.
  • Displays and data ports suffer in May and June heat and dust, and older units may not talk to current CAD.

Is renting a total station instrument worth it?

Renting suits a firm that already has a competent surveyor and lacks only the instrument for a few weeks.

Published rental prices are scarce: the only clear hire figure on IndiaMART's survey service listings was ₹25,000 for a month, with no word on tripod or prism4. Before renting, ask when it was calibrated, whether batteries last a day, whether cable and software come with it, and who pays for a drop.

Buy, rent or hire a crew: three real situations

The right choice follows the amount of work, not the size of the project.

A single plot or a boundary dispute

A factory owner needs one plot surveyed before extending a shed. Buying a ₹3 lakh instrument to save a ₹10,000 survey makes no sense, so hire a crew.

An eight-month building job

A contractor needs column grids, levels and construction layouts several times a week. Compare an employed surveyor with an owned or rented instrument against our full-time surveyor with instrument at ₹1,20,000 a month, counting salary, finance and checking time.

A survey firm or road contractor with continuous work

When the instrument is busy most days, buying wins. Such firms often need a GPS receiver and base station as well, for satellite based positioning on open ground. That kit relies on global positioning system signals checked against a reference station, so GPS signals must reach the site. Compare its cost in DGPS Machine Price in India before budgeting for both.

Some jobs need neither. Carrying levels across a slab, drain or road takes only an auto level costing a few thousand rupees; the Mezux guide: Auto Level Survey shows how.

What does Mezux Touch charge for total station work?

A plot up to 1 acre starts from ₹10,000, each extra acre costs ₹3,000, and layout or stake-out work is charged at ₹8,000 per crew-day, exclusive of GST. A full-time site surveyor with instrument is ₹1,20,000 per month. Your written quotation confirms the final figure for the job.

With six company-owned total stations, a Delhi NCR crew reaches site the same day or within 1 working day. In other states the surveyor who lives in that city sets up immediately or by the next working day, with mobilisation/travel, where applicable, listed in the quote. DWG and PDF drawings and an Excel or CSV point list arrive inside three working days of the fieldwork. Our instruments are specified to 5 mm + 3 ppm in distance, ample for plots, buildings and roads.

Send the location and what the drawing is for, and start a survey enquiry for your project. You will then hold a written price to set against any purchase you are considering.

Frequently asked questions

Which total station is best for building construction?

For layout and levels on a building site, a 2″ or 5″ reflectorless instrument is enough. Spend the difference on a good operator instead of a better angle figure.

Is a 1-second total station necessary?

Only for precise control, monitoring or long sight lines. For plots, roads and buildings it adds cost without changing the drawing.

Total station or DGPS: which should I buy first?

It depends on your sites: open land favours satellite equipment, built-up areas favour a total station. To weigh the two properly, learn about DGPS vs Total Station.

Can a total station be rented with an operator?

Yes, through a crew-day or a full-time surveyor arrangement. Our layout work is ₹8,000 per crew-day; a full-time surveyor with instrument is ₹1,20,000 per month, GST extra.

Does a total station need calibration?

Yes, because collimation, compensator and plummet errors build up with transport and knocks, so check it regularly and get it serviced at least once a year.

How accurate is a total station survey?

Typical distance accuracy is a few millimetres plus a few parts per million; our instruments are specified at 5 mm + 3 ppm.
