Quick AnswerOld lanes off Ashok Rajpath and in Patna City leave almost no sky, so a total station survey in Patna measures them shot by shot. It also pegs piles and columns for new blocks and logs where neighbouring walls stand before an excavation begins. Where no pillar is in view, the instrument resects from three coordinated marks. Layout is ₹8,000 per crew-day. More on the Mezux total station survey.

Where in the city does a total station survey in Patna beat satellites?

In the crowded historic quarters, and on construction plots beside the metro works where layout must hold to millimetres. It is also the sounder method anywhere walls or trees spoil a receiver's fix. Think of Patna City's galis, the shoulder-to-shoulder shops of Ashok Rajpath, or the by-lanes behind Boring Road and Kankarbagh: party walls, overhanging balconies and hardly a patch of open sky. The instrument asks only for a clear sightline to its prism.

How do we work in lanes with no view of control?

Through free stationing. The tripod goes wherever the gali has room, and the instrument works out where it stands from readings to at least three coordinated marks.

Illustration: with no pillar visible from the work spot, the tripod is placed freely and sights three or more coordinated marks; the surplus readings pin down its position and expose any mark that has been knocked.

Known points are placed in advance on roof tops, wall plates and kerbs where they can be seen from several places. Each is fixed by satellite or by a traverse from open ground. Measuring to three or more gives a check: if one has been disturbed by building work, the residuals show it at once, and that point is left out. The approach lets a crew work along a crowded lane in short hops without carrying a long traverse through traffic.

Which jobs need it in Patna?

  • Detail plans of shops, houses and lanes for redevelopment, partition or valuation.
  • Column, pile and wall layout on apartment and commercial sites.
  • Movement records for houses beside deep digging or tunnel drives, with wall targets read before work starts, while it runs and once it ends.
  • Road widening and drain strips through built-up stretches.

After the first metro section opened in October 2025, construction moved on to other stretches, among them an underground run from Rukanpura towards Patna Junction. Owners of buildings close to such works sometimes want their own record of position and level before excavation starts nearby, so any later movement can be measured against it.

What does a typical old-city job look like?

Picture an ancestral house in a Patna City gali that the heirs want to split or rebuild. What they need is a scaled plan of plot and structure, connected to the lane and to the houses either side. The crew fixes two or three known points at the lane mouth and free-stations along the lane to pick up the frontage, steps and drain. It then works through the building to record its outer walls, shared walls and courtyard. Projections over the lane and the line of the neighbours' walls are measured too, since those are exactly what a partition deed or a building plan will be argued over.

The result is a plan showing the plot, the built area and each wall's thickness, with the frontage width at several points, not one, because old lanes are seldom parallel.

How are millimetres kept honest?

By measuring every angle on both faces, closing every traverse, and repeating the check points at each visit. Distance precision is specified at 5 mm + 3 ppm. For monitoring, identical targets are observed from identical stations on every visit, and each change is reported in millimetres beside its expected uncertainty, which separates genuine movement from noise. Concrete is never poured before an independent set-up has rechecked the pegs, a step repeated at every stage on construction layouts beside the metro works.

How does it fit with other surveys?

Satellite control first, then the total station, with levels and buried services as needed. The pillar stage is explained in how our DGPS survey in Patna works. Projects that hinge on heights, drain falls and filling suit booking a topographic survey in Patna better. Footings beside buried electric lines or water pipes call for what we do: GPR survey in Patna first. A Jharkhand site may be added to this order, and for that state our page on getting a total station survey in Ranchi done right applies.

Frequently asked questions

What is free stationing?

Setting up the instrument at any convenient spot and computing its position from measurements to three or more known points.

Our quarrel is over the khatiyan boundary. Is this the right service?

Not on its own. Lines drawn from the records belong to a land surveyor; see when you need a land surveyor in Patna.

Why not use DGPS everywhere?

In the old city, close-set walls and tree canopy hide the sky from receivers, so they fail there; read more on DGPS vs total station.

Can you record my building before nearby digging starts?

Yes. We fix targets and read their positions and levels, then repeat during and after the work.

How early can work start in busy streets?

At first light in most cases, to finish frontages before shops open and traffic builds.
